According to AppleInsider , a number of iPhone users have taken to social media to confirm that their devices are experiencing a strange bug. Specifically, when they try to text an Android user, the iPhone adds a "+" symbol to the beginning of the phone number. Adding the "+" character forces the iPhone to recognize the number as an international number even if it is not. For example, a phone number that is normally 858-867-5xxx is displayed on the iPhone as +85 88675xxx.
The phone number on the other end suddenly had a "+" sign in front of it.
The issue isn't limited to texting Android users, but also affects those using Google Voice numbers. However, the issue appears to only affect iPhone owners in the US. A Reddit thread has also been posted about the issue, with multiple iPhone owners reporting that their devices are experiencing the same issue.
As of now, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for this bug. It seems to be an iPhone-related bug, as there have been no reports of users having issues sending messages from their Macs. The iOS 16.5 update that Apple just released doesn’t seem to be the cause of the problem, as many iPhone owners have reported having issues even before the update was released.
As for troubleshooting, some iPhone users have suggested that sending a message to yourself might fix the issue. Some users have suggested that the fix is already on the server side, while others have said that simply changing the format of the number by adding a “+1” in front of it is enough.
