3D printing in the medical field - great potential for Vietnam

3D printing applications in medicine in Southeast Asia are not yet developed, Vietnam has full potential to develop products in this field.

That was the opinion of Dr. Pham Trung Hieu - Deputy Director of Operations of the Center for 3D Technology in Medicine, Vin Uni University - at the signing ceremony of cooperation between the global leader in the field of 3D printing, Stratasys, and AES Vietnam, in Hanoi on October 24.

3D printing applications in medicine

In fact, in Vietnam, 3D printing technology has been applied in the treatment of a number of diseases. In July 2024, Cho Ray Hospital successfully treated a patient who had lost a large portion of the tibia shaft due to an infected open fracture, using a 3D printed titanium alloy mesh graft technique. This is the second patient in Vietnam to have this technique applied in treatment.

According to Mr. Rajiv Bajaj - CEO of Stratasys India and Southeast Asia, in recent years, 3D printing technology has been widely used in the medical field.

In this field, 3D printing technology is used to manufacture models that serve three main purposes.

First, create complex anatomical models for teaching purposes. These are models of tissues and parts of the human body such as blood vessels, and models that simulate real medical cases with a high level of accuracy.

Second, creating anatomical models to serve the diagnosis and planning before surgery. Thereby helping doctors find a better surgical direction, at the same time helping patients and their families understand more about the disease.

Third, 3D printing applications to produce artificial implants (screws, grafts, bone defects, artificial joints, etc.).

Artificial implants are printed with biocompatible materials such as titanium, peek… to replace bones in the skull, face, limbs and joints. These details are designed individually for each patient, especially in complex cases where conventional implants cannot be used.

Cost savings, great potential

Dr. Pham Trung Hieu - Deputy Director of Operations of the Center for 3D Technology in Medicine, Vin Uni University - shared that the 3D printing market in medicine is still new, although it has existed for 10 years in Vietnam.

Although this technology has only recently been widely applied in the field of dentistry, 3D printing in medicine in Vietnam is also being used to create anatomical models and produce artificial implants.

"There are many cases of patients with bone cancer or some accident that leads to bone defects, but we do not have a solution to print bone parts or reconstruct software for patients.

Previously, these parts had to be imported from abroad, with long waiting times and high costs. Clinicians could not participate in the manufacturing and design process, so sometimes when brought back to Vietnam, these bone and joint parts did not fit the patient," Dr. Hieu shared.

According to Dr. Hieu, the 3D printing market in the medical field is considered a potential market, growing rapidly with a scale of billions of dollars in just the past 5 years.

Currently, the world is moving towards the production of advanced tissues from 3D printing technology, which are half biological, half mechanical tissues such as hearts, or tissues with attached robots.
