Towards safe and sustainable development

On the morning of September 14 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA) held a press conference to announce the organization of Vietnam Water Week 2023 with the theme "Water for quality of life and sustainable development". This year's Water Week will be held from September 28 to 30 at the Thu Dau Mot International Exhibition Center, Binh Duong Province (WTC EXPO).

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Diep, Chairman of VWSA, Vietnam's water sector is facing many challenges, requiring it to ensure that it meets the needs of daily life and economic development. Meanwhile, a number of decrees on drainage, wastewater treatment and sub-law documents issued many years ago are no longer suitable for the reality of socio-economic development.

"Through the Water Week event, the government and people will understand more about the difficulties and shortcomings of the water industry in life and in production and business of the water supply and drainage industry to support state management agencies in building appropriate policies, promoting the water industry and for the water industry to develop sustainably, serving people's lives, serving production and business and serving the country's socio-economic development," Mr. Diep emphasized.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Van Thien, Vice President of VWSA, Chairman of Binh Duong Water and Environment Corporation (Biwase) said that climate change is occurring, sea levels are rising rapidly, Hanoi has many heavy rains, while in the years of drought, the western provinces have salt water and no fresh water, many highland provinces have no water source.

"At the same time, socio-economic development has left a large amount of wastewater in urban areas, polluting rivers and streams... this is a serious threat to water resources for water plants. Therefore, overcoming all obstacles to organize Vietnam Water Week in Binh Duong is very meaningful, contributing to finding solutions to promote sustainable water industry development," Mr. Thien added.

In addition, sharing management experiences, introducing and transferring advanced technologies during the week is also an important part for Vietnamese water industry enterprises to have the opportunity to enhance production capacity, improve quality, and bring the water industry closer to international standards for clean water supply services.

Within the framework of the week, there will be seminars discussing hot issues of the water sector with the participation of representatives of state management agencies, international organizations, domestic and international experts and scientists, business units in the field of water supply, drainage, wastewater treatment and environmental sanitation in Vietnam, and many water sector organizations in many countries.

Specifically, there are 4 main topics of discussion at the workshop: draft law on water supply and drainage; drainage and wastewater treatment for public health and the environment; solutions to adapt to climate change for the water sector and a scientific and technological workshop and training to improve the capacity of the Vietnamese water sector.

Several side events including the 2nd meeting of the Southeast Asian Water Sector Network (SEAWUN) were recently re-launched in Jakarta (Indonesia) in June 2023 by 7 national water sector associations including Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines and several domestic and international side events.

Along with that is the exhibition of products and technologies in the water and environment industry, creating space for domestic and international enterprises and suppliers of materials and equipment to introduce advanced solutions and technologies, promote their brands, thereby reaching potential customers and seeking opportunities to expand cooperation and promote trade.
