From previous versions of Android, the function of turning your phone into a webcam is not new but has many limitations in features, number of supported applications as well as complicated installation, difficulty in connecting to the computer.
In the new Android 14 version introduced by Google, users can simplify the usage process because this feature has become official, supporting different applications.
Meanwhile, iPhone users can use their phones as webcams since iOS 16, which was released last year (only for computers running macOS). One difference between the two features is that iPhones use a wireless connection, while Android requires a wire to connect the phone to the computer.
Using smartphones as webcams has become popular these days.
However, Android 14 is not yet popular because Google has only upgraded its Pixel smartphones to the official version. Devices made by other manufacturers have not yet received the Android 14 update, so users will have to wait in the near future, the specific time depends on each hardware manufacturer as well as the user's device.
Google recommends that users use a tripod or place the device in a fixed position for the best image quality, avoiding shaking or blurring. Video quality depends on the camera system (front or rear) of the device, which is set by the user during the initial setup process.
To use an Android smartphone as a webcam for a computer, users follow the steps below:
1. Connect your phone to your computer using a compatible USB-C cable.
2. When the screen shows successful connection, tap the notification to select the optional camera category to display.
3. Select display settings according to your needs such as zooming in, using the phone's front or rear camera.
4. Open the application that needs to use the webcam and select Android Camera as the official connected camera.
