National Phu Dong Sports Festival with 8,919 athletes from 63 provinces and cities

Mr. Nguyen Van Tung - Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee spoke at the opening ceremony and said, "Hai Phong City, also known as the Red Flamboyant City; Port City, has a tradition of "loyalty - determination to win", and is very honored to be trusted by superiors and assigned the task of hosting the 10th National Phu Dong Sports Festival.

In terms of education and training, the city has always been ranked among the top in the country. For 26 years, the city has had students winning international Olympic medals; it is the first locality to support 100% of tuition fees for all levels of education since 2020 and has very high rewards for students winning international awards.

In the previous 9 Phu Dong Sports Festivals, the Hai Phong City student athletes have always been ranked among the top in the country, especially in 1996 when they were ranked 2nd nationwide. In the 10th National Phu Dong Sports Festival in 2024 - Region 2 in Thai Nguyen province, the Hai Phong delegation also ranked 2nd with 28 Gold Medals, 28 Silver Medals and 47 Bronze Medals.

With these results, Hai Phong City has fully converged the factors of economic development, cultural and social development, education and training development, physical education and sports development, so that Hai Phong can firmly step on the path of development. The youth of Hai Phong City are striving to study and practice, to build Hai Phong into a leading city in the cause of industrialization and modernization; a driving force for development of the Northern region and the whole country.

The 2024 Phu Dong Sports Festival (HKPĐ) has the participation of a total of 8,919 athletes from 63 provinces and cities, of which the largest is the Ho Chi Minh City delegation with 663 athletes, the second is the Hai Phong delegation with 587 athletes, the third is the Hanoi delegation with 559 athletes, the smallest number of athletes is the Vinh Long delegation with 13 athletes. Of the 15 competitions, 10 were regional competitions (Primary and Secondary School), the Final only competed in High School, including the following events: Swimming, Table Tennis, Badminton, Shuttlecock, Athletics, Volleyball, Pole Pushing, Tug of War, Basketball, Gymnastics (Pole Pushing is only regional). The events competing in all 3 levels of Primary, Secondary and High School include: Soccer, Karate, Taekwondo, Chess, Traditional Martial Arts, Vovinam...

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son said that “to contribute to maintaining and promoting the campaign “All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho”, encouraging students to regularly practice and compete in sports to improve health, develop physical strength, train the will to rise up, contribute to moral education, personality, and comprehensive human development, the National Phu Dong Sports Festival is organized by the Ministry of Education and Training every 4 years. This is also a competition to discover, nurture and train sports talents for the country.

The National Sports Festival is the highest gathering and concentration point of the physical training movement to improve the health of high school students. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for sports talents among students nationwide to show off. Localities also take this opportunity to discover their own local sports talents.

After more than 40 years of implementation with 10 congresses, the 2024 National Sports Festival is the largest ever with more than 20,000 student athletes and officials from 63 provinces and cities competing in 15 sports. The successes of the recent Sports Festival at all levels are the result of close direction and investment from leaders of Party committees at all levels, local authorities and educational institutions, and the care of families, parents, coaches and the whole society. But first and foremost, the awareness of physical exercise and physical training among students nationwide has increased significantly.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training, Nguyen Kim Son would like to thank the leaders and people of the provinces and cities that hosted and organized the first phase of the HKPĐ and sincerely thank the leaders and people of Hai Phong city for hosting the national HKPĐ.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son wished all the students and outstanding people in the training movement who attended the Sports Festival to be winners. The Minister hoped that all the athletes would consider this an opportunity to learn rather than seek awards, to show their best performance rather than win or lose. They should aim for a greater victory, which is to win over themselves, overcome their limits, overcome the sadness of not being successful and accept victory with humility and learning. That is the lasting and real victory that this Sports Festival wants to bring to them.
