The United Nations Security Council met on August 30 on the situation in the Middle East, focusing on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, at the request of Switzerland and the UK.

More than 40,000 Palestinians killed

Representatives of the Security Council member countries listened to the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya present a summary report on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip after more than 10 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas. The conflict has caused great human losses, with more than 1,000 Israelis killed and 108 Israeli hostages still being held.

On the Palestinian side, more than 40,000 people were killed and more than 93,000 injured in the Gaza Strip, including many women and children.

Msuya said humanitarian efforts and operations in the Gaza Strip are facing serious challenges. Evacuation orders issued by Israel have increased in record numbers in recent weeks, greatly affecting Gaza civilians and relief teams. More than 88% of Gaza is subject to evacuation, with communities living in precarious conditions, lacking clean water and severe medical care.

At the meeting, representatives of the countries agreed with the report presented by Msuya, expressed concern about the escalation of violence in the West Bank, reaffirmed the need to establish a ceasefire, release hostages, open safe corridors for humanitarian activities and, in the long term, implement the two-state solution.

Escalation in the West Bank

While the military campaign in the Gaza Strip has not ended, Israel continues to launch a campaign in the West Bank. According to Reuters, Israel conducted an airstrike in the West Bank on August 30, marking the third day of large-scale military operations that have killed at least 16 Palestinians. The United Nations warned that Israel's military operations in the West Bank are "inflaming an already tense situation" and put pressure on Israel to end this operation. US Vice President Kamala Harris said it was time to "end this war".

The latest flashpoint is Judea and Samaria in the West Bank, where 3 million Palestinians are governed by the Palestinian Authority led by President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel sees it as a concentration of Iran-backed forces such as the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Islamic Jihad and Hamas.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani has condemned recent Israeli military attacks on Palestinian cities and refugee camps in the West Bank.

According to Mr. Kanaani, the Israeli military attacks, which included “brutal destruction of urban infrastructure and services” and “violent incursions into medical centers,” reflected Israel’s intention to “expand the scope of civilian killings and crimes against the Palestinian people.”

During a meeting with a US Congressional delegation led by Senator Joni Ernst in Cairo on August 29, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi warned of the dangerous consequences of escalating violence in the West Bank and called for the implementation of internationally recognized legal agreements on the two-state solution.

Israel has agreed to a three-day pause in fighting in the Gaza Strip from 1 September, from 06:00 to 15:00, to support polio vaccination efforts. The World Health Organization's campaign aims to vaccinate about 640,000 children under the age of 10 against polio, with each child receiving two doses. 1.26 million doses and 500 boxes of vaccine have been delivered to the Gaza Strip.
