With the characteristics of strongly divided terrain, creating regions with different climates, many rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, large water surface areas, the strengths of production facilities in mountainous areas are long-standing agricultural, livestock and processing products. Increasing the connection of consumption channels and developing oriented products will be the solution to increase the value as well as promote the consumption of these potential products.

In the mountainous areas of the province, many endemic, rare and valuable products with high economic value have been developed into commodities, such as: cinnamon essential oil and bamboo straws of Thuong Xuan district; Chau Lang longan candy, Chi Linh Son forest honey, Muong Deng mac khen salt of Lang Chanh district; Kim Tan sugarcane, Van Du oranges, Vy Giang oranges, guava of Thach Thanh district; Pu Luong forest honey, tangerine tea of Ba Thuoc district; Doi Ao dong vermicelli, Dat Cam forest honey, Son Thanh fragrant sticky rice wine of Cam Thuy district; Huong Ngoc dong vermicelli, Thach Lap areca nut sticky rice, Huong Que tapioca flour, brocade products of Ngoc Lac district; Cay Noi sticky rice, Muong Lat district's smoked buffalo meat; Muong Ca Da longan cake, dried bamboo shoots, dried beef, Pieng Cu sour bamboo shoots of Quan Hoa district; Tan Ma tea of Quan Son district...
The entire region has formed commodity production areas, creating many high-quality agricultural products, foods, and medicinal herbs, with 135 products recognized as 3-star OCOP and 1 product recognized as 4-star OCOP, meeting standards and quality to be put into the distribution system in the province, domestically and towards export.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the commercial system in the mountainous region has also been developed with 95 markets, 8 recognized supermarkets and many commercial stores, convenience stores, mini supermarkets. With many important traffic routes running through such as: National Highway 15, National Highway 217, convenient to connect with Ho Chi Minh Highway and Tho Xuan Airport, it has created conditions for the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa to promote trade and economic development.
Recently, with the continued strengthening of specialized sectors in supporting the promotion and consumption of key agricultural and food products, regional specialty products, and OCOP products of mountainous districts through conferences, direct and online trading on e-commerce trading floors, the products have initially spread to the market. Through fairs, promotional weeks, connecting supply and demand and product consumption, many typical goods have successfully entered the points of sale at retail distribution stores of supermarkets, shopping malls, retail chains such as: Co.op Mart Supermarket, The City, Winmart, Go and soon Aeon Mall Thanh Hoa Commercial Center... This cooperation connection has also formed long-term contracts between businesses, supermarkets, food chains, processing and exporting enterprises signing long-term contracts right from the beginning of the year, the beginning of the season with businesses and cooperatives of localities to ensure the quantity and time of product consumption for units to proactively plan production.
The agricultural sector and localities are also actively implementing support projects, mechanisms, policies, and encouraging enterprises, cooperatives and people in mountainous areas to apply science and technology in production and processing to create high-quality agricultural and food products, ensuring food safety. Accordingly, the sector promotes the construction and development of production chains, especially production chains certified by VietGAP, GlobalGAP, HACCP, GMP, organic production; guiding enterprises, cooperatives and production facilities to standardize production processes according to the chain to ensure the creation of high-quality products, meeting criteria on technical barriers, food safety regulations, traceability, etc.
The above solutions, if implemented effectively, will soon overcome the limitations in production and consumption of products in mountainous areas such as the scale of chain linkages being mostly small and unsustainable; the rate of products consumed through chain linkage contracts is still low; passive production and lack of market information, not closely linked with businesses in the value chain; increasing transportation capacity, harvesting and preservation processes are not guaranteed... The above weaknesses are somewhat limited and make the province's indigenous products, although rich, not yet developed proportionally.
In the coming time, in order to support the commercialization and expansion of the supply chain of products in mountainous, remote and isolated areas, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will guide localities to organize activities linking culture, tourism with trade. At the same time, the organization will deploy a group of solutions integrating programs and projects to build pilot models suitable to the economic conditions of each region, especially pilot models to support the consumption of products and goods for people in mountainous, remote and isolated areas.
