This morning, October 29, Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Chap Commune, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province, Vo Van Tuan, said that prolonged heavy rain due to the impact of storm No. 6 had caused a local turtle pond to burst, causing hundreds of millions of dong in damage.

Mr. Vo Van Nien (born in 1969), owner of a turtle pond in Lai Binh village, shared that he previously dug 4 freshwater fish ponds with a total area of about 1 hectare. More than 2 months ago, he renovated a fish pond of about 0.5 hectare to switch to raising turtles.
After completing the concrete pond system, Mr. Nien bought soft-shell turtles to breed and then release them. The total initial investment cost for building the pond, buying food and seeds was about 300 million VND.
This is the first soft-shell turtle farming model in Vinh Chap commune. Mr. Nien plans to expand this model if the trial farming is successful.
However, at around 10am on October 27, heavy rain caused the water level in the lake to rise, breaking the concrete wall, and 2,000 soft-shell turtles (weighing about 200g each) were swept away by the floodwaters.
“The water came so fast that I couldn’t react in time. About 30 meters of the concrete wall of the turtle pond was broken, all the turtles were swept away by the water, I could only salvage a few dozen. Three freshwater fish ponds raising thousands of bass, carp, tilapia... with a total area of 0.5 hectares were also flooded. The initial damage is estimated at about 200 million VND. This year failed, but next year I will do it again,” said Mr. Nien.
Chairman of Vinh Chap Commune People's Committee Vo Van Tuan added that prolonged heavy rain in the area has flooded more than 75 hectares of freshwater fish, 45 hectares of crops, and swept away about 500 livestock and poultry by floodwaters... Currently, local authorities have counted and reviewed the damage to report to higher authorities.
