The program to honor 100 outstanding blood donors nationwide in 2023 was organized by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation in coordination with the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion from July 27-29.
According to Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, since the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation was established (in 2008), the whole country has mobilized and received more than 16 million units of blood, the amount of blood collected each year is always higher than the previous year, from more than 500,000 units (2008) to more than 1.4 million units (2022), of which 99% of the blood received is from voluntary blood donors; the quality of blood is getting better and better.
Up to now, 100% of provinces, cities; districts and 86% of communes and wards have established steering committees for voluntary blood donation. The voluntary blood donation movement has become a regular activity, spreading widely, transmitting love, demonstrating the responsibility of the whole society, bringing life, hope and happiness to many families. In particular, many forces actively participate in blood donation such as health, police, army, youth, Red Cross...
Many voluntary blood donation activities across the country have been successfully and effectively organized, becoming movements, suitable for each target group, attracting a large number of participants, typically major campaigns such as: Spring Festival, Red Sunday Program, Red Journey, "Summer Blood Drops" campaign...
This is the 15th year that the National Blood Donor Honor Program has been held. Each year, 100 outstanding examples from all over the country are selected for honor, with a total of 1,500 delegates honored.

"Having witnessed many difficult and miserable situations, I always think "I will give whatever I can to anyone, I will help whoever I can". My blood is available in my body, I can help people, help life until I no longer have the health. My family has 4 people, the total number of blood donations of the 4 members is more than 250 times, my husband donated blood 72 times and is now past the age of blood donation, my daughter donated blood 52 times, my son donated blood 48 times and my two children will continue to donate blood until they are no longer eligible", said Ms. Phuong.
Living proof, shining examples of good people, good deeds
Speaking at the meeting after listening to the delegates' sharing, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his emotion when meeting delegates representing millions of voluntary blood donors nationwide.
He was particularly impressed by the delegates who had donated blood and blood components 80, 90, or even over 100 times, such as delegates Tran Minh Men (Binh Thuan), Tran Nhu Dung (Hanoi), Ho Kim Phuong (HCMC); or typical families participating in blood donation such as the family of delegate Vo Tan Cuong (Vinh Long), the family of delegate Ha Quoc Hai (Da Nang)... The delegates were also shining examples of actively participating in mobilizing family, friends and the community to donate blood, including those who have persistently contributed for the past 30 years.
Many young people participating in the "Donate blood to save lives" journey not only have more beautiful memories but also become more mature, gain more life experience, and aspire to contribute more and more to the community, society, and country. Many people from all over the country have connected with each other to form a volunteer network, a community of "noble hearts".
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: Today’s science and technology are not yet capable of creating blood, but human love can help those in need of blood. The human heart not only holds warm blood, but also warms with compassion, sharing, and deep sympathy.
Referring to the folk song "There is a saying that accumulate virtue and cultivate oneself/Help each other in times of trouble, rich and poor understand each other", the Prime Minister was very moved when listening to the delegates' sharing, as well as many other memorable stories that he knew. For example, a pregnant woman in Hoa Binh lost too much blood during an emergency surgery, while the blood reserve at the District Medical Center had run out, the officers and soldiers of the Kim Boi District police promptly donated blood, saving the patient's life.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the story of a young man who lost a lot of blood in a traffic accident and was saved by receiving blood donated by doctors and nurses at the Tien Yen District Medical Center in Quang Ninh; or the case of a young man in Quang Nam who lost a lot of blood in a work accident and was saved by precious drops of blood from provincial police officers.
"And there are many cases of critical illness due to anemia that have been saved in time thanks to the priceless blood drops of millions of blood donors across the country, including the blood drops of 100 typical blood donors present here today. One hundred delegates today are beautiful symbols of compassion, of the heart of sharing and spreading love, positive energy in the community, society, for the development of the country.
You are truly living proof, shining examples of good people, good deeds, joining hands to build a compassionate community, making great contributions to building a society rich in humanity, promoting the fine traditions of the nation, creating motivation and inspiration in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland," the Prime Minister said.
Every drop of blood is precious and should be respected.
The Prime Minister stated that the meeting was even more meaningful when the people of the whole country were proudly organizing many meaningful events to celebrate the 76th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day; respectfully remembering heroic martyrs, showing gratitude to those who contributed to the revolution - those who devoted their lives, not sparing their blood and bones, fighting in fierce and arduous struggles for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for the happiness of the people.
The Party and State always pay attention to creating favorable conditions for voluntary blood donation to develop. Even when the COVID-19 epidemic was complicated, on April 7, 2020, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a letter calling on and encouraging compatriots, comrades and soldiers nationwide to participate in voluntary blood donation.
Promoting the tradition of "loving others as you love yourself", millions of people have actively participated in voluntary blood donation and voluntary blood donation campaigns, bringing their red blood drops to help people in critical condition. Over the years, countless people and lives have been supported, saved, and regained their lives between the fragile boundary of life and death thanks to the priceless, timely blood drops of voluntary blood donors across the country.
On this occasion, the Prime Minister commended and highly appreciated the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Red Cross Society, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and relevant departments, ministries, branches and organizations for their efforts in advising and implementing the campaign to mobilize the entire population to participate in voluntary blood donation, creating a movement and trend, achieving many commendable results.

The Prime Minister emphasized: Blood is priceless. Every drop of blood is precious and should be respected. Blood donation is not only a medical term, but also a noble gesture, demonstrating compassion and responsibility towards society and the community, sowing more seeds of humanity in life and beautifying the tradition of mutual love and affection of the Vietnamese people. "Every drop of blood given, a life remains". Voluntary blood donation is both a responsibility, a duty, and a "command" from the heart of each person.
In fact, although the blood donation movement has spread strongly in the community, the need for blood in society is still very large. In many places, there is still a shortage of blood. In some places, some areas, the movement is still weak, the number of people donating blood is still low such as mountainous areas, remote areas, border areas, and islands.
"All of that is to say that the blood donation movement is increasingly necessary, more necessary and requires more participation from the social community. How many people, how many fates have been, are being and will be saved by our blood donation. Let's actively do that to light up and continue the lives of those in need of blood with compassion, love, protection and care," the Prime Minister said.
In the coming time, in order for blood donation and voluntary blood donation to continue to develop, spread widely, effectively and practically, the Prime Minister proposed to respond to and effectively implement the call of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong: "Compatriots, comrades, soldiers nationwide, each healthy person who meets the criteria, should always be ready and enthusiastic to participate in blood donation and actively mobilize everyone to donate blood regularly to save people to help each person check their health, save the sick, for a healthy and humane society, contributing to the cause of protecting, caring for and improving people's health, and the sustainable development of the country".
The Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Red Cross Society, and the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation to review, complete, and supplement relevant regulations to better implement policies and regimes for voluntary blood donors; and continue to consider and resolve difficulties and problems related to voluntary blood donation.

Along with that, there are practical and specific solutions and activities to continue to promote more effectively the work of mobilizing voluntary blood donation; paying special attention to the quality, safety and sustainability of voluntary blood donation activities. Strengthening and building stable, adequate and safe blood donation points and blood banks; proactively regulating blood nationwide to ensure reasonableness and science to serve patients.
The Prime Minister noted that it is necessary to promote digital transformation in blood donation work; quickly unify and synchronize information on blood donors nationwide, connecting blood donors, blood transfusion centers, blood banks and hospitals to improve proactiveness and timeliness in all situations.
The Prime Minister requested all levels, sectors, agencies, and organizations, especially active forces such as health, police, army, and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, to continue to pay attention to and promote voluntary blood donation; promote the role of steering committees at all levels; encourage and create more favorable conditions for voluntary blood donors to continue to donate blood regularly.
News agencies and newspapers continue to promote propaganda and mobilize people to participate in blood donation through innovative and creative forms and methods, with rich and attractive content, on many media; set an example, honor typical examples, spread acts of kindness and affection in the activity of "donating blood to save lives" widely throughout society.
According to the Prime Minister, it is necessary to combine synchronously, smoothly, harmoniously, reasonably and effectively scientific, medical, psychological, sociological measures, new technologies and communication measures to do better in this work, to have the safest, highest quality, most complete and timely blood source for emergency and treatment of patients at each hospital.
"Every day, every hour, across the country, there are still unfortunate cases, tragic and critical situations due to blood loss due to accidents or serious, incurable diseases, requiring blood to sustain life. At those times, patients can only hope for kind hearts, golden hearts, with the responsibility and affection of the community.
I hope and believe that the 100 exemplary blood donors present here and millions of voluntary blood donors across the country will continue to promote the spirit of humanity, the fine traditions of the nation, with the meaning of blood brothers, "children of Lac Hong", "many red silks cover the mirror", constantly contributing and sharing their blood drops for the community and society. At the same time, become the core, active propagandists spreading the spirit, noble gestures, making practical contributions to the cause of caring for and protecting people's health, so that "Lac Hong blood" can save more people, contributing to the country's strength, prosperity, our people increasingly prosperous, happy and no one is left behind.
Donating blood is nurturing life, lighting up hope, lighting up dreams, lighting up good things in the community, in society. And let's all continue the journey of lighting up, the journey of "donating blood to save lives" full of great meaning and noble humanitarian responsibility; together honor, respect, and thank voluntary blood donors," the Prime Minister advised and called for.
