Than The Cong, a 12th grade Physics major student at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, is the only Vietnamese contestant to win a Gold Medal at the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) recently held in Malaysia.

This is the result of Cong's continuous efforts and struggles, contributing to the overall achievements of the Vietnamese national team in the regional arena.

Passionate about physical phenomena

After returning from the APhO competition, Than The Cong said he only had about a week at home before returning to Hanoi to review for the International Physics Olympiad taking place in Iran next July.

Sharing about his path to Physics, Cong said that in 6th and 7th grade, he participated in the Math competition but the results were not as expected. After that, he got acquainted with Physics and under the teaching and guidance of his grandmother - a teacher of this subject, he began to enjoy learning about things and phenomena happening around him. At that time, he always wanted to explain phenomena such as why it rains, why there is wind... The more he studied, the more Cong found Physics very interesting, closely related to real-life phenomena, helping him understand the problems he wondered about.

It is this love and passion that has helped Cong achieve remarkable academic achievements in this subject. In grade 8, Cong won second prize in the city-level Physics competition; in grade 9, he won second prize in the city-level and second prize in the provincial-level Physics competition. With that result, Cong was admitted directly to grade 10 specializing in Physics at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted.

Continuing to assert himself, in grade 10, Cong won the Gold Medal in the exam to select excellent students of specialized high schools in the coastal and Northern Delta regions.

In grade 11, Cong won first prize in Physics in the National Excellent Student Competition. He was selected for the National team to participate in the 2023 Asian Physics Olympiad and won a Bronze Medal.

In grade 12, Cong continued to win first prize in Physics in the National Excellent Student Competition, was selected for the National team to participate in the 2024 Asian Physics Olympiad and won the Gold Medal.

With a solid record of achievements, sharing his study secrets, Cong said that he usually masters the knowledge learned in class, then continues to improve his knowledge in theory and practice through many books, newspapers, documents in both Vietnamese and English, and online courses. For difficult exercises, he studies and discusses with teachers and friends to answer questions. He also always spends time doing in-depth exercises and practicing solving difficult types of exercises.

Teacher Nguyen Van Doa, Physics teacher at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, who is directly responsible for training and teaching Cong, said that since entering grade 10, Cong has shown a keen sense and a very good sense of Physics. Along with that, he has the ability to grasp problems and solve math problems well, and is diligent, hard-working, and determined in his studies.

"Changing color" of medals

This is Cong's second time participating in the Asian Physics Olympiad. In 2023, when he was an 11th grader, Cong was the youngest contestant of the Vietnam National Team to participate in the Competition and won a Bronze Medal. This year, before participating in the Competition, Cong set a goal to achieve higher results and did so with the result of a Gold Medal.

To be a member of the National Team participating in the 24th Asian Physics Olympiad, after winning first prize in the National Excellent Student Competition, Cong continued to participate in the second round with 40 contestants to select the 8 best contestants.

The 24th Asian Physics Olympiad was held in Malaysia from June 3 to 10, 2024, with 208 contestants from 27 countries and territories. Contestants had to take two theoretical and practical exams, each lasting 5 hours.

This time, Cong participated with a relaxed and confident mindset, overcoming his weaknesses in the experimental test. Therefore, he achieved good results in both tests, in which the theoretical test scored 27.6/30 points, the experimental test scored 9.8/20 points.

“My experience in taking the test is to stay calm, read the questions carefully, not be subjective with easy questions and check the answers, and at the same time, allocate time reasonably. This achievement of mine is thanks to the great support, help, and encouragement from teachers, friends, family, and school. I would like to thank everyone,” Cong said.

With a good English foundation, during the competition, in addition to the competition time, Cong also had the opportunity to exchange and learn knowledge from international friends and learn more about many cultures in countries in the region.

Mr. Tran Duy Phuong, Principal of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, said that the results Cong achieved were a great joy for the teachers and students of the school, the Department of Education and Training of the province as well as the whole Bac Giang province; continuing to affirm the quality of general education, affirming the right direction in the work of discovering, selecting and nurturing excellent students of the school.

Cong is a shining example for students in the school to follow and learn from. His achievements have contributed to the overall achievements of the Vietnam National Team in the regional arena.

With this achievement, Cong is one of five students nationwide who will participate in the International Physics Olympiad in Iran this coming July. He said he was quite nervous when participating in this competition for the first time.

My immediate goal is to focus on reviewing well, continue to learn new knowledge, solve more types of exercises and learn about the host country's strengths in Physics to be able to win a medal.../.
