On November 14, according to Yonhap , the South Korean government said that all flight takeoffs and landings across the country will be temporarily restricted to control noise during the annual college entrance exam, known as the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), taking place this weekend.
According to the Ministry of Transport, aircraft takeoffs and landings will be restricted for 35 minutes, from 13:05 to 13:40 (local time) on November 16, during the English listening assessment of the CSAT exam.
The ministry said the decision to reduce aircraft noise could affect candidates taking the exam.
Accordingly, all aircraft - except in emergency situations - must fly in standby mode, at an altitude of 3km or more above the ground, under the control of air traffic control agencies.
The Korea Times reported that the measures forced 94 flights to adjust their schedules.
According to the Ministry of Transport, airlines will send notices of flight schedule changes to passengers who have booked seats.
The CSAT, held on the third Thursday of November every year, is one of the most important academic events in Korea because the results of the exam will be the basis for students to choose the country's universities or colleges.
Each year, the CSAT takes about eight hours to complete. Test takers are given a score of 1 to 9 for each of the main subjects: Korean, Math, English, History, and minor subjects such as social sciences, natural sciences, vocational studies, and a second foreign language.
On exam day, in addition to airlines having to adjust schedules, offices, banks, and the stock market also opened an hour later to avoid traffic jams.
