According to Anadolu news agency, the Hamas movement said it has initiated a broad consultation process among its leaders and organizations to choose a new leader to replace leader Ismail Haniyeh who was recently assassinated in Iran.
Hamas said its executive groups are continuing their work and will announce the results of the consultations once they are complete. Hamas leader Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on the morning of July 31, after attending the inauguration of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Several prominent figures are said to be able to become the new leaders of the Hamas Islamist movement, such as Mr. Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leader in Gaza, and Mr. Khaled Meshal, former Hamas political leader.
Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo are currently at a standstill. Israel claims that Hamas is causing the lack of progress in negotiations.
Meanwhile, Egyptian security officials said the ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip had reached a deadlock following the assassination of Mr. Haniyeh. Mr. Haniyeh played a key role in the ceasefire negotiations, actively communicating with Egyptian and Qatari mediators.
