Hanoi Ngo Quy Duong and Nguyen Tien Dat both scored 26/30 points, leading the entrance exam for grade 10 specialized in Mathematics at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences.
The two male students received the news on the evening of June 12, when the Natural Sciences Specialized School, Hanoi National University, announced the admission scores for grade 10. In the total admission score (conditional math score and specialized math score doubled), Duong and Dat both scored 8.5 in specialized math.
"I was a bit surprised. Yesterday, I received a lot of congratulations from everyone," said Duong, from Ngoi Sao Inter-level School.
Ms. Ngo Thi Quynh Hoa, Duong's mother, said that the family had previously received the score from the teacher and other parents via text message. With this score, she hoped her child could be in the top group.
"But I never expected the valedictorian to be my child," said Ms. Hoa.
Yesterday was also a sleepless night for Nguyen Tien Dat's family. Le Thi Chiem, Dat's mother, received continuous calls and messages from relatives. When he learned that he had achieved the highest score, Dat did not believe it, asked his mother many times and took a photo of the school's admission message to ask his teacher again.
"I thought passing was fun, I never thought I would be valedictorian," a male student at Linh Dam Secondary School shared, noon June 13.

Dat and Duong both took the 10th grade math exam at three schools, including the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, the Hanoi National University of Education, and the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School (under the Hanoi Department of Education and Training). Both commented that the exam requirements were easy, while the specialized exam was within their ability. The exam from the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences was rated the most difficult by both students, the Pedagogical University was unique and interesting, and the specialized exam from the Department was quite long.
Strong in geometry but not confident in inequalities. The male student regretted that on the day of the Department exam, he thought of a way to solve the last problem but did not have enough time to do it. Duong shared that he often got stuck on geometry and combination questions but he was satisfied with his test because he was determined to focus on completing the questions to the best of his ability.
The common point of the two male students is that they loved Math since childhood but only really chose to study specialized Math at the end of 8th grade - the final stage for the race to enter specialized schools in Hanoi.
During his primary school days, Duong won many medals in the International Kangaroo Math Competition (IKMC) and the Singapore and Asia Math Competition (SASMO). However, when he entered secondary school, Duong chose to study in the Physics major, then in grade 8 he switched to Chemistry and in grade 9 he decided to study Mathematics.
According to Duong, those are all subjects that he loves so he wants to experience them. While studying Physics and Chemistry, the male student still maintained his study of Math. Therefore, when he realized his true passion for Math, Duong changed direction without much difficulty. In grade 9, Duong took the city's excellent student Math exam and won third prize.
"It's a pity for Duong. If he had studied Math from grades 6-7-8, he would have likely won first prize," said Mr. Truong Trung Quyet, a specialized Math teacher at Ngoi Sao Inter-level School.
Teacher Quyet said he recognized Duong's ability since grade 5. In class, Duong had outstanding and different thinking compared to other students.
"He is proactive and determined to think through difficult lessons. Duong is also calm in his studies," the teacher said, adding that Duong hardly attends extra classes, except for two math classes in the final stage.
As for himself, the male student shared that although he was a bit worried about majoring in Math, he still took time to rest and relax properly, and did not let himself be pressured.
"I spend two hours studying Math and some time on other subjects every night. I like playing soccer and games," Duong said.
Meanwhile, Dat studied primary school in An Giang and moved to Hanoi in 6th grade. His father was a soldier far from home and his mother was a primary school teacher, so Dat arranged his own studies. He liked studying Math since kindergarten, but it was not until the summer of 8th grade that he decided to focus on this subject because he was inspired by his teacher and admired his older siblings who studied specialized subjects.

Ms. Chiem said she did not teach knowledge in advance because she wanted her child to come to class to listen to the lecture and ask her mother if he did not understand.
"If he doesn't understand, he has to ask again. He always struggles with questions about why he got this result because he wants to understand the essence, instead of learning by rote," Chiem said. According to her, Dat rarely studies at home, but when he concentrates, he learns very quickly.
During his four years in secondary school, Dat's average score in Math was always 9.6 or higher, and in grade 9 it was 9.9. Dat also won second prize in the city's excellent student Math competition.
"Dat is very good, especially in science subjects. He is hard-working, loves his parents and always strives in his studies," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc, Dat's homeroom teacher.
Although he was accepted into his dream school, Dat is still anxiously waiting for the exam results from Ams and Pedagogical University before making a final decision. Duong said he has made his choice. He plans to focus on studying English and experiencing club activities in high school.
