Diep Chi said that when she entered the 8th grade, she still had not decided on her path in high school. After a friend shared and invited her to study together for the entrance exam to the Math major, she decided to make this her goal. Thinking is doing, from then on, Chi began to focus and spend a lot of time on Math. "I determined that whatever I do, I always have to be serious, not superficial," the female student shared. Because she started "racing" to enter the Math major a bit later than many of her friends, Chi chose to focus on Algebra to "build the foundation". This is also the part that takes up more points in the exams. In order to quickly catch up with her friends, Diep Chi spent a lot of time and effort on studying. In addition to studying in class, she also went to extra classes, each session lasting about 3 hours. After returning home, Chi continued to review more. There were even days when she studied for more than 12 hours. Talking about her studying methods, Chi said she always tries to sit at the front desk to concentrate on listening to the lecture. “If I don’t understand something, I will ask my teachers and friends. The most important thing for me is to regularly review old lessons and practice a lot of questions.” Chi also has a small notebook and often carries it with her to take notes or review knowledge. According to Chi, only then can she remember deeply. “At first, I only studied for the goal of passing the specialized exam, but the more I studied, the more I loved algebra in particular and mathematics in general, especially the arithmetic part with many interesting lessons. I felt like my thinking was ‘jumping numbers’ faster when studying those lessons,” Diep Chi said. However, Chi also had difficulty and disliked the inequality part the most. “Because it was quite heavy, there were many types of exercises that made me confused.” Studying mathematics was quite heavy, and there were so many good friends around that Diep Chi sometimes felt pressured. However, she said she was very lucky because the pressure she put on herself was ‘relieved’ a lot by her parents and teachers. “In particular, the closer the exam date got, the more pressure I felt. But thanks to my parents and teachers always being there to share, encourage and express their trust, I was able to enter the exam with a more relaxed mood,” Diep Chi said. Diep Chi was also very happy that the math teachers in class as well as the extra classes paid a lot of attention to her, often taking time to talk privately whenever she showed signs of decline in her studies or health. “The teachers not only gave me math knowledge but also gave me a lot of motivation, about diligence and making every effort,” Chi said. At the end of grade 9, Diep Chi's cumulative average score was 9.4; of which, her math score was 9.8. Ms. Vu Ngoc Diep, Diep Chi's mother, said that her child set very high goals for herself, so she often sat 'glued' to her desk to study. “There were times when my child studied so enthusiastically that my husband and I were quite worried. I had to find a way to pull him away from the desk so that he wouldn’t get stressed. My husband and I often talked and shared to help him not be negatively affected psychologically.” Ms. Diep still remembers the memory of Chi having a fever near the exam day because she was determined to study. “After that day, Chi listened to her parents about reducing the pressure on herself to be in the best condition for the exam,” Ms. Diep said. In addition to studying, Chi often chooses to listen to classical music to relax. Faced with many opportunities, Diep Chi said she decided to study Math at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. She had taken the entrance exam to the secondary school system of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School but missed the deadline, so now she is extremely excited to finally officially become a student of this school. Chi said this has been her favorite school since she was in 4th grade because she admired the environment and exciting activities in addition to the quality of study.
