Hanoi focuses on controlling dengue fever outbreak

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên20/08/2023

According to the Hanoi Department of Health, the number of dengue fever (DF) cases recorded in the city has been increasing continuously since July, with some outbreaks having many patients and lasting for a long time. On August 14, the city recorded more than 3,500 cases of dengue fever in 30/30 districts, towns and cities; 440/579 communes, wards and towns (accounting for 76%). The number of cases has increased rapidly in the past 4 weeks, with an average of 500 - 600 cases recorded each week. The number of cases has increased significantly compared to the same period in 2022 (760 cases, 0 deaths).

Monitoring up to August 15 showed that some districts and counties recorded many dengue fever cases such as: Thach That (537 cases); Thanh Tri (342 cases); Hoang Mai (282 cases); Bac Tu Liem (266 cases); Ha Dong (206 cases). Through the results of inspection and monitoring by the health sector, some dengue fever outbreaks were not thoroughly handled from the beginning in the area, leaving many mosquito larvae behind, the mosquito larvae index was high beyond the risk threshold, leading to prolonged spread and outbreak.

GUARANTEE THERAPY BED

According to information from Hospital E (Ministry of Health), since July, the Tropical Diseases Department of the hospital has received about 10-20 dengue fever cases per day, of which 5-10 cases have to be hospitalized for monitoring and treatment. Dengue fever cases have been recorded in pregnant women, the elderly and people with many medical conditions (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.), with some cases almost every year. There was a time when the number of inpatients for dengue fever treatment was up to 30-40 people. In the past 7 months, nearly 200 inpatients for dengue fever have been discharged from the hospital.

The Hanoi Department of Health has inspected and supervised the admission and treatment work, ensuring hospital beds to meet the treatment needs. The total planned number of beds at Hanoi hospitals for the treatment of dengue fever patients is 712, but 1,104 beds have been actually provided. In the past week, the number of inpatient dengue fever patients was 776.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Health Tran Thi Nhi Ha has requested localities to monitor and handle the outbreak effectively. The Department has directed units to send mobile epidemic prevention teams directly to districts, towns and cities to guide epidemic prevention measures. High-risk areas are areas with a mosquito larvae index BI of 20 or higher, while some communes have a BI index of 85 and need to control this index below 20 to prevent dengue fever.

Early outbreak treatment within the first 3 days

According to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC), the results of monitoring and inspection at outbreaks showed some shortcomings: incomplete treatment, insect index after treatment was higher than the risk threshold, chemical spraying rate did not meet requirements... It is forecasted that in the coming time, the number of cases may continue to increase and more outbreaks will appear, paying special attention to old outbreak areas, communes and wards with complicated epidemic developments in previous years.

Deputy Director of Hanoi CDC Khong Minh Tuan noted: If cases and outbreaks are detected early within the first 3 days, the outbreak will be effective. On the contrary, when an outbreak occurs from 10 patients, the risk of dengue fever spreading widely is inevitable.

At the meeting on dengue fever prevention in Hanoi on the afternoon of August 16, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha requested departments, branches, districts, towns to proactively review all conditions for disease prevention, focus on widely disseminating dengue fever prevention measures to each person and each household, emphasizing that mosquito larvae eradication is the first and most important measure.

Through actual treatment, doctors have encountered severe developments of dengue patients such as coughing up blood, vaginal bleeding before menstruation, black stools, elevated liver enzymes, pleural effusion, peritoneal effusion, hypotension, etc. Doctors recommend: If people have a sudden high fever, they should go to the hospital immediately, because dengue can change from mild to severe, patients need to be examined, clinically classified to predict the disease and have an appropriate treatment plan.

In particular, elderly people with many underlying diseases or pregnant women with dengue fever often have more severe symptoms and many complications. Pregnant women with dengue fever can give birth prematurely, have low birth weight babies, and bleed during and after birth.
