In order to contribute to the implementation of the province's coffee tree replanting project, from 2020-2022, the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center has built a model of "Replanting Arabica coffee trees in Huong Hoa district". Up to now, the results show that the new coffee varieties are well adapted, the model has brought high economic efficiency to the people.

Mr. Tran Xuan Hai's family in But Viet village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district was supported by the provincial Agricultural Extension Center to build a coffee tree replanting model with an area of 0.8 ha, the variety used in the model is THA1 coffee variety. After more than 3 years of implementation, it has shown that the trees are adaptable, grow well, and have no significant pests or diseases. Recently, Mr. Hai's family's coffee garden has been harvested, with a yield of 25 tons/ha, THA1 coffee beans on high screens, businesses have placed orders and purchased at a selling price of 15,000 VND/kg. After deducting all costs, Mr. Hai earned a profit of 150 million VND/ha.
Mr. Hai said: “There has never been a year when coffee yields were as high as this crop. I found that the THA1 variety is suitable for the soil here. With the support and guidance of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, this is the highest yielding coffee crop, with an efficiency 1.5 times higher than other coffee gardens. Seeing the potential of the THA1 coffee variety, my family also planted another 0.5 hectares of this THA1 variety.”
Coffee is one of the three main long-term industrial crops of Quang Tri province, grown mainly in Huong Hoa district. The coffee area by the end of 2023 is over 3,700 hectares, the coffee bean yield is estimated at 1.1 tons/ha, the output is estimated at 4,274 tons/ha. The reason for the low coffee yield is that the area of old coffee trees is still large, accounting for about 50% of the area. Therefore, coffee replanting is considered one of the important goals for the successful restructuring of the agricultural sector.
During the 3 years of implementation (from 2020 to 2022), the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center built 3 models of replanting tea coffee in communes of Huong Hoa district, with the introduced varieties being Catimor and THA1 coffee, with a total area of 30 hectares, of which 6 hectares were deployed in Huong Phung commune. For the THA1 coffee garden, seeds were purchased from the Central Highlands Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology, sown and selected to ensure uniformity for breeding. Seedlings were inspected by specialized agencies of the industry before being planted to ensure production standards. After planting, it was shown that the trees were suitable for the soil and climate conditions of Huong Hoa.
During the implementation of the model, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center applied the “hands-on” method, providing enthusiastic guidance on planting and care techniques for households, and how to compost organic microbial fertilizer from processed coffee husks and agricultural waste. Thereby, it not only solved the problem of environmental pollution but also created a source of organic fertilizer on the spot, helping to reduce investment costs in production and improve coffee quality. After 3 years of replanting coffee trees, the model has achieved very positive results.
Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center Tran Can said that from this result, the center hopes that localities will expand the area of planting new coffee varieties, especially THA1 in the area. Currently, the center is also implementing a provincial-level scientific project on some new coffee varieties TN6, TN7, TN9 and THA1. Through evaluation, these coffee varieties grow well, have high and stable yields. In the coming time, the center will advise the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to build demonstration models, transfer and replicate new coffee varieties in the area.
The implementation of the coffee tree replanting model in Huong Hoa district using new high-yield, high-quality Arabica coffee varieties to replace old coffee trees contributes to improving the productivity and quality of Quang Tri coffee products; building and restoring the Khe Sanh coffee brand; successfully restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing added value and sustainable development.
