Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery fell 90 yuan to 3,552 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures jumped as some investors unwinded long positions to take profits, with some analysts saying top consumer China fell short of expectations when it announced more aggressive stimulus measures at a news conference.
The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 fell 2.37 percent to 783.5 yuan ($111.15) a tonne.
Prices hit their highest since July 8 at 844.5 yuan a tonne earlier in the session, on hopes of more stimulus measures.
Benchmark November iron ore SZZFX4 on the Singapore Exchange fell 4.97% to $105.25 a tonne, its lowest since September 30.
Prices hit their highest since June 3 at $115 a tonne earlier in the day; they rose 2.5% as the Chinese market was closed for a holiday.
China is “fully confident” of meeting its full-year economic targets, the state planner said at a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday.
"The long-awaited conference this morning did not give the expected signal of a stronger stimulus package. As a result, some (traders) partially liquidated their long positions to take profits," said Pei Hao, an analyst at international brokerage Freight Investor Services.
A series of monetary easing and property stimulus policies in the world's second-largest economy over the past two weeks have sent prices of the key steelmaking ingredient up more than 20%.
China's home sales rose following a series of real estate stimulus measures aimed at boosting the country's struggling property market since late September, state media said on Saturday.
In addition, moves by Chinese regulators to urge financial institutions to strengthen internal controls on leverage and prevent illegal bank loans from entering the stock market also weighed on sentiment.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE erased earlier gains, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coke DCJcv1 down 0.77% and 1.61%, respectively.
The gains of steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange narrowed significantly. Rebar SRBcv1 rose 0.43%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 rose 1.07%, and stainless steel SHSScv1 rose 1.6%. Steel bar SWRcv1 jumped 8.1%.
