Quarter I/2025: Industry breaks through, sets 5-year record

In the first quarter of 2025, the industrial production index is estimated to increase by 7.8% over the same period last year, the highest increase in the first quarter since 2020.

Processing and manufacturing industry increased by 9.5%

According to the latest report on the socio-economic situation in February 2025 released by the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance) this morning, April 6, industrial production in the first quarter of 2025 continued to improve, with the industrial production index estimated to increase by 7.8% over the same period last year, the highest increase in the first quarter since 2020. Of which, the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 9.5%.

The industrial production index (IIP) in the first quarter of 2025 is estimated to increase by 7.8% over the same period last year (in the first quarter of 2024, it increased by 5.9%), of which the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 9.5% (in the first quarter of 2024, it increased by 6.0%), contributing 7.9 percentage points to the overall growth; the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 4.6%, contributing 0.4 percentage points; the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 11.6%, contributing 0.2 percentage points; the mining industry decreased by 4.7%, reducing 0.7 percentage points to the overall growth.

Notably, the production index in the first quarter of 2025 of some key secondary industries increased compared to the same period last year: Production of motor vehicles increased by 36.1%; production of leather and related products increased by 18.1%; production of garments increased by 14.6%; production of beds, cabinets, tables and chairs increased by 12.9%; repair, maintenance and installation of machinery and equipment increased by 12.8%; production of rubber and plastic products increased by 12.7%; production of other means of transport increased by 11.8%; wood processing and production of products from wood, bamboo, rattan... increased by 11.0%; production of electronic products, computers and optical products increased by 10.6%; textiles increased by 9.9%; food processing increased by 8.6%. On the contrary, the IIP index of some industries decreased: Crude oil and natural gas exploitation decreased by 9.6%; electrical equipment production decreased by 1.1%; beverage production decreased by 0.7%.

Industrial production index increased in 59 localities

The industrial production index in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year increased in 59 localities and decreased in 04 localities nationwide. Some localities had a fairly high increase in the IIP index due to the high increase in the processing and manufacturing industry; the electricity production and distribution industry. On the contrary, some localities had a low increase or decrease in the IIP index due to the processing and manufacturing industry; the mining industry and the electricity production and distribution industry increased low or decreased.

Some key industrial products in the first quarter of 2025 increased compared to the same period last year: Automobiles increased by 81.5%; televisions increased by 22.9%; natural fiber textiles increased by 18.6%; NPK mixed fertilizer increased by 15.8%; casual clothes increased by 14.3%; phone components increased by 12.0%; leather shoes and sandals increased by 9.1%; aquatic feed increased by 7.4%. On the contrary, some products decreased compared to the same period last year: Gaseous natural gas decreased by 12.9%; crude oil decreased by 6.4%; synthetic fiber textiles decreased by 2.4%; rolled steel decreased by 1.8%; mobile phones decreased by 1.7%; chemical paint decreased by 0.9%.

The consumption index of the entire processing and manufacturing industry in March 2025 increased by 6.5% compared to the previous month and by 3.5% compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter of 2025, the consumption index of the entire processing and manufacturing industry increased by 5.4% compared to the same period in 2024 (the same period in 2024 increased by 8.2%).

In addition, the inventory index of the entire processing and manufacturing industry is estimated to increase by 5.9% as of March 31, 2025 compared to the same period last month and by 15.1% as of the same period last year (the same period last year increased by 14.1%). The average inventory ratio of the entire processing and manufacturing industry in the first quarter of 2025 is 90.0% (the average in the first quarter of 2024 is 68.7%).

The number of employees working in industrial enterprises as of March 1, 2025 increased by 1.1% compared to the same period last month and increased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year.

Of which, labor in the state-owned enterprise sector increased by 0.1% and 0.6%; non-state enterprises increased by 0.7% and 3.1%; foreign-invested enterprises increased by 1.4% and 5.8%.
