Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery rose 16 yuan to 3,386 yuan/t.
Benchmark iron ore for December delivery on the Singapore Exchange rose 2.02% to $101.15 a tonne, after hitting its highest since Nov. 11 at $101.90 a tonne.
A weaker dollar makes commodities priced in greenbacks cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.
"Data over the weekend showed that the pace of local government bond issuance accelerated, indicating more funds for real estate projects, boosting the iron market," said Pei Hao, an analyst at international brokerage Freight Investor Services (FIS). "Moreover, $100 a tonne is a key level that traders have been watching closely because once prices fall below this level, demand for seaborne cargoes increases even amid high port inventories."
Some mills have started buying seaborne cargoes to meet production needs during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday in January, said a Chinese steelmaker and a trader, both of whom requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
"Such buying will provide some support to prices, preventing them from falling sharply, but it is not enough for a strong recovery as port stocks remain quite high," FIS's Pei added.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE also rose, with coking coal and coke up 1.69% and 1.46%, respectively.
Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar rose 1.84%, hot-rolled coil rose 1.19%, wire rod rose 0.59% and stainless steel rose 0.57%.
