With the advantage of climate, pristine and majestic landscapes, many discovered caves combined with historical tourism potential have attracted a large number of domestic and foreign tourists to Huong Hoa in recent years. The number of visitors each year remains stable, in which the main focus is on domestic tourists.
In 2023, the number of tourists to the area will reach 160,000; in the first 9 months of 2024 alone, it is estimated to reach over 170,000 with about 1,000 guests staying, with an estimated revenue of over 60 billion VND. The district currently has 30 accommodation establishments with a total of 536 rooms; the number of workers employed from tourism activities is about 120 people.
According to Action Program No. 48-Ctr/HU dated December 19, 2019 of the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee, Huong Hoa has identified to focus on building 3 groups of potential tourism products including: eco-tourism; cultural - historical tourism; community - craft village tourism. Up to now, the district has created rich and attractive tourism products to attract tourists.
Regarding eco-tourism products, currently focusing on development at Ta Puong waterfall, Huong Viet commune and Chenh Venh waterfall, Huong Phung commune. Regarding cultural and historical tourism products: Developed and implemented a plan to restore festival activities of the Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups; built and maintained the "Highland Market" model; organized walking routes and entertainment services to serve the needs of people and tourists.
Regarding community tourism products - craft villages: The district is focusing on directing the development of community tourism in Chenh Venh village, Huong Phung commune; building a plan to develop community tourism combined with eco-tourism in Trang - Ta Puong village, Huong Viet commune.
The district also focuses on developing tourism associated with historical revolutionary tourism resources with ancient battlefield relics, eco-tourism, community tourism, learning about ethnic culture and potential for border tourism development; paying attention to connecting tourism with the provinces of Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue...
The budget for tourism development investment in the district from 2018 to present is 80 billion VND. Regarding Resolution No. 12/2022/NQ-HDND, up to now, in Huong Hoa district, there is no tourism model recognized as a tourist destination or tourist area, so the application of the Resolution has not been implemented.

At the meeting, Huong Hoa district raised a number of difficulties and problems related to the degradation of historical relics; many traditional cultural features of the Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups are at risk of gradually disappearing; community tourism development has not promoted the traditional craft village factor. Regional linkage in tourism development between Huong Hoa district and neighboring areas is not strong, not really a main stop for tourists.
Most tourist destinations have not been planned; tourism models are mainly spontaneous, management is not strict, so there is a risk of negative impacts on the ecological environment. Therefore, the district recommends that competent authorities need to plan potential tourist destinations in the district in accordance with each region, such as planning for resort tourism development at Khe Sanh Lake, Ta Du Stream - Tan Hop Commune, Sa Mu Pass - Huong Viet Commune; planning for discovery tourism development at caves and waterfalls such as Ta Puong Waterfall - Huong Viet Commune, Kulum Cave, Brai Cave - Huong Lap Commune, Chenh Venh Waterfall - Huong Phung Commune; planning community tourism in localities that still preserve the cultural and traditional features of the Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups; strengthening the direction of the restoration and embellishment of relics to serve tourism development.
Support investment and construction of infrastructure to serve tourism development in tourist areas and tourist spots with great potential in the district; support the development of community tourism in Ta Du village, community tourism combined with homestay in Huong Viet, Huong Phung, Huong Son, Huong Lap, Khe Sanh communes; build traditional craft villages in Lia commune (including brocade weaving, basketry, and forest wine). Pay attention to training and developing tourism human resources, fostering knowledge of community tourism...

Speaking at the meeting, Chairwoman of the Provincial Party Committee's Inspection Commission, Head of the Provincial People's Council's Culture and Social Affairs Committee Ho Thi Thu Hang acknowledged the positive results of Huong Hoa tourism in recent times. To help remove difficulties and obstacles, promote the continued development of Huong Hoa tourism, the district is requested to immediately update the province's general planning and include it in the district's regional planning; in which it is necessary to plan land use, set up landmarks, and delimit land areas for tourism development purposes in order to call for and attract strategic investors to the district.
Continue to study new regulations of the Land Law to guide and apply to homestays and farmstays to help people feel secure in investing and developing tourism. The district issues a plan to implement resolutions on tourism development, helping tourist establishments carry out procedures to receive support from Resolution No. 12/2022/NQ-HDND; add new tourist destinations to the planning.
Regarding the Ta Puong waterfall tourist site, the Provincial People's Council's Committee for Culture and Society is requested to compile recommendations to submit to competent authorities; at the same time, the district is expected to pay attention and call for resources to invest in the road leading to the waterfall, toilets, garbage collection points, accommodation facilities... because this is one of the leading tourist attractions in Huong Hoa district at present.
