Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on March 16 confirming that he had informed Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar that he would recommend that the government fire the official.

In a statement, the head of the Israeli Cabinet said: "Due to lack of trust, I have decided to propose to the government to terminate the term of Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar."

For his part, the head of Shin Bet said that Prime Minister Netanyahu's decision to fire him had nothing to do with Hamas' raid on Israel on October 7, 2023, saying that the move was largely political.

“I am responsible for the agency’s duty (in failing to prevent the attack)… it is clear that the intention behind my dismissal had nothing to do with the October 7 events… Prime Minister Netanyahu’s expectation of personal loyalty, which is at odds with the common good, is a completely unjustified desire,” Bar’s statement said.

The decision to fire the Shin Bet chief is likely to spark criticism in Israel, where media reports have described Mr Bar's relationship with Prime Minister Netanyahu as strained during the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In recent weeks, the two officials have also been embroiled in a public dispute over plans to reform Israel's Internal Security Agency.

Notably, the Shin Bet is currently investigating some of Netanyahu's aides for allegedly receiving money from Qatar - one of three countries acting as a mediator between Hamas and Israel - while the war in Gaza is raging.
