The value of Movitel - Viettel brand in Mozambique: More than just a network operator
That is the opinion of the Secretary General of Mozambique's ruling Frelimo Party, Mr. Roque Silva Samuel, in an interview with reporters in March 2024. Becoming the number 1 network operator thanks to dedication Kaylani, 14 years old, a student at Molana High School, the capital of Maputo, used to face a lack of books when going to school and had to share books with more than a dozen classmates. The little girl often had to walk kilometers to her friend's house to borrow books. The girl's learning problem was partly solved thanks to the network operator from Vietnam: Movitel - Viettel brand in Mozambique. "Unlike other networks, Movitel has many cheap 3G/4G packages exclusively for students. Thanks to that, I can access learning materials, connect with friends, and explore the world on the Internet without any obstacles," Kaylani said.
Not only Kaylani, many students in Mozambique also consider Movitel's network an important part of the knowledge acquisition process. Mr. Felipe Alfiado, Principal of Molana High School, Maputo, shared: "To simplify the use of the Internet for students, we decided to allow Movitel to open a SIM and device sales point on campus. We completely trust Movitel because they provide services at reasonable prices, integrate available utilities on devices and especially outstanding network quality." From urban to rural areas, the shortage of books due to limited education budgets has turned smartphones into a popular source of knowledge in Mozambique through Movitel's Internet. Many farmers in Cayave village said that Movitel is not only for communication. According to Mr. Adradi Pedro, people here often go online to check the weather, learn about needs and plan their crops. Cayave village has no electricity grid, so there is no television to provide basic information to farmers such as weather, disease prevention, water levels, etc. Since Movitel covered the Cayave village area with mobile phones, the farmers' agricultural output has also increased as people have the Internet to learn and share farming experiences with each other, said Mr. Pedro.
As for Ms. Teresa Afonso Assane, who works at the Maputo fish market, using Movitel's e-Mola e-wallet has long been a habit. E-Mola brings many benefits to her as customers do not need to carry cash. At the same time, having an e-wallet also helps her transfer money to relatives even if they are far away. Since being tested by Movitel in 2016, e-Mola e-wallet has quickly become a phenomenon. e-Mola has recorded rapid growth in the context of Movitel continuing to build new 'miracles' in its overall business operations. In 2023 alone, e-Mola increased by more than 3 million wallet users, bringing the total number of accumulated customers to nearly 6 million, with e-wallet service revenue growing by 505%. In the first 4 months of 2024, e-Mola maintained an impressive growth rate of up to 230% compared to the same period last year. The ratio of customers using e-wallets to the total number of customers using Movitel mobile phones reached 81%. More than a network "Movitel has connected the people of Mozambique by phone and Internet. Movitel's contributions to Mozambique do not stop at providing a telecommunications infrastructure, connecting people but also a means for economic development and human development", said Mr. Roque Silva Samuel - Secretary General of the Frelimo Party. After 12 years of operation, Movitel is the network with the largest infrastructure and deepest coverage in the country. In May 2024, this network became the telecommunications brand with the largest market share in Mozambique with the number of subscribers exceeding 11.7 million. Movitel's production and business activities have always ensured efficiency and maintained a high growth rate, with many consecutive years achieving a growth rate of nearly 30% (7 times higher than the world average industry growth rate). In early 2024, Movitel was also awarded a certificate of merit by the Mozambique government as the largest taxpayer in Mozambique with a cumulative tax payment value to date reaching more than 327 million USD.
Movitel is also a pioneer and leader in the digital transformation process in Mozambique, providing free network access to 2,500 schools and 24 classrooms, while digitally transforming and building e-government infrastructure for the Office of the National Assembly of Mozambique and a number of other state agencies. Movitel also participates in building schools and medical stations, accompanying the government and people of Mozambique through supporting transmission lines, hotlines, and essential items in the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. Currently, Movitel is creating jobs for more than 100,000 workers nationwide. “Movitel is increasingly asserting itself in providing value to the people, country and economy of Mozambique. What Movitel contributes to Mozambique is greater than a telecommunications network. It is impossible to talk about economic and human development without Movitel,” said Mr. Roque Silva Samuel. The fact that Movitel is the largest taxpayer in Mozambique demonstrates its effective business operations and its importance to the country's economy and government.
