Prices have risen due to tight global supplies and concerns about dry weather affecting coffee production in major producing countries such as Vietnam and Brazil. Prices have risen to unprecedented highs, bringing many benefits to growers.
Talking to reporters, some coffee purchasing agents in the Central Highlands said that although coffee prices have increased, purchasing is still difficult, and many farmers continue to wait for prices to increase.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, a farmer in Kon Tum province, said that since morning she has received many phone calls from agents asking to buy goods when prices go up, but she has no intention of selling.
"About a month ago, my family sold 6 tons of coffee at 133,000 VND/kg, so we don't need the money yet. We still have about 8 tons of coffee and are waiting to see what the price is before deciding what to do next," said Ms. Hien.
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, if the upward trend continues, coffee prices could reach VND140,000 to VND150,000 per kilogram. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, coffee exports in the first quarter of this year reached more than US$2.8 billion, nearly one and a half times higher than the same period last year.
However, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in 2025, La Nina is expected to replace El Nino, which could cause frost, seriously affecting coffee production in Vietnam and Brazil. In early January, frost in Son La burned many coffee areas in Chieng Co, Chieng Den, and Hua La.
