In recent years, self-treatment at home has become a habit of many people, especially when they feel mildly ill and do not want to go to the hospital.

However, this poses many serious risks that patients cannot foresee. Self-treatment at home can lead to serious complications, even life-threatening.

In recent years, self-treatment at home has become a habit of many people, especially when they feel mildly ill and do not want to go to the hospital.

One of the major problems with self-treatment at home is the lack of accurate diagnosis from medical specialists. Each disease has similar symptoms, but without a full examination and testing, patients can easily confuse diseases, thereby applying the wrong treatment method.

Improper treatment will not only not relieve the disease but can also make the condition worse.

For example, many people have the habit of taking painkillers when experiencing abdominal pain without realizing that it could be a sign of a serious illness such as appendicitis or stomach ulcers. Taking painkillers on your own can mask symptoms, making the condition difficult to diagnose and easily causing serious complications.

Using drugs without a doctor's prescription can cause serious harm. Each drug has a specific dosage and usage.

If used incorrectly or in excess, medications can cause dangerous side effects. For example, antibiotics used incorrectly can lead to antibiotic resistance, which causes the body to become immune to the drug, making future treatment more difficult.

In addition, self-purchasing of drugs of unknown origin, counterfeit drugs, and substandard drugs is also very common. This is a factor that increases the risk of infections, allergic reactions, and dangerous side effects.

When treating themselves at home, many people do not realize that their condition may have worsened. For example, people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, if not treated properly, will lead to serious complications such as heart failure, stroke or kidney failure. Delaying medical treatment at a medical facility can make the condition worse, even leading to death.

This is especially dangerous for diseases that do not have obvious symptoms in the early stages, such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases. If the patient does not go to the hospital for regular check-ups and only relies on his or her own feelings, the disease may have progressed seriously without being detected in time.

When self-treating without controlling the infection, especially infectious diseases, the patient can unintentionally spread the disease to others.

For example, when suffering from flu or respiratory diseases, if not treated properly and precautions are not followed, the sick person can spread the disease to family, friends or the community. This not only increases the risk of disease in the community but also puts an additional burden on the health system.

Many people also tend to use dietary supplements and folk remedies to treat their health problems. While some of these products may be beneficial in supporting health, using them without consulting a doctor can lead to unwanted side effects. Herbs or dietary supplements can sometimes interact with the main treatment, reducing the effectiveness of the medication or causing dangerous side effects.

A good example is the use of certain herbs to treat diabetes without medical treatment. Although herbs may help control blood sugar levels to a mild degree, without medical supervision, the patient may experience unpredictable risks, such as hypoglycemia.

Self-treatment without medical supervision can cause anxiety and stress, especially when the condition shows no signs of improvement. Feelings of anxiety and confusion can impair mental health, making the condition worse. Many people, unable to control their condition, fall into a state of prolonged stress, affecting their quality of life and recovery.

Recently, the Department of Surgery of Medlatec General Hospital received and successfully treated a patient with appendicitis. Male patient D.M.D (16 years old, from Hanoi) came to the hospital with pain around the navel, continuous dull pain, then spreading to the right iliac fossa, vomiting food, no fever. The patient took medicine (unknown type) at home, but it did not help, so he went to Medlatec for a check-up.

At the hospital, after a clinical examination combined with tests and abdominal ultrasound, the doctor diagnosed Mr. D. with acute appendicitis at the 5th hour.

Immediately afterwards, the patient underwent laparoscopic appendectomy using the Karl Storz endoscope. After 5 days of treatment, the patient's abdominal pain was gone, his general condition was stable and he was discharged from the hospital.

Appendicitis is a very common disease and progresses very quickly. Symptoms of the disease will appear within 24 hours, including: abdominal pain around the navel and gradually moving to the lower right abdomen (right iliac fossa), the pain increases and does not decrease; fever; loss of appetite with vomiting; difficulty defecating or diarrhea; abdominal wall stiffness.

However, Dr. Dang Van Quan, Department of Surgery, Medlatec General Hospital, warns that in many cases, patients with appendicitis only have pain in the epigastric region or around the navel, which can easily be confused with symptoms of stomach pain or digestive disorders. Self-medication with pain relievers, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs can mask symptoms and make the condition worse.

Appendicitis progresses very quickly, symptoms will appear within 24 hours. About 65% of patients have complications of rupture after 48 hours. If recognition is delayed and treatment is not timely, there is a risk of life-threatening complications such as: appendiceal mass, abscess, peritonitis...

Currently, the only treatment for an inflamed appendix is to remove it. Most surgeries are performed laparoscopically.

If diagnosed and treated early, the mortality rate in patients with appendicitis is very low (1/1,000). In cases of surgery with complications, the mortality rate is up to 10%, and patients are very susceptible to intestinal obstruction after surgery.

When the body shows symptoms of appendicitis, the patient needs to go to the nearest medical facility immediately for an accurate diagnosis to avoid life-threatening complications.
