The EU has issued new regulations on increased additional inspections and emergency measures to manage the import of agricultural and food products from outside the EU.
On December 18, 2024, the European Commission issued Regulation No. 2024/3153, applying additional inspection measures to a number of agricultural and food products imported from countries outside the EU, including Vietnam. This regulation aims to strengthen food quality and safety control, especially for products with high risk of pesticide residues.
Under the new regulations, the inspection frequency for durian products from Vietnam will be increased from 10% to 20%, continuing to apply according to Appendix I. The reason for this change is that the rate of warnings about pesticide residues in durian shipments exported to the EU is still high. This is a strong move from the EU to more strictly control the quality of imported products, ensuring safety for consumers.

In addition to durian, the EU also introduced inspection measures for other products from Vietnam. The inspection frequency for dragon fruit will be 30%, while for okra and chili, the inspection level will increase to 50%. In particular, these shipments must have a food safety certificate and pesticide residue test results according to the regulations in Appendix II. The reason for these measures is that in the past, the number of dragon fruit, chili and okra shipments exported to the EU violating regulations on pesticide residues (MRL) remained high, with no signs of decreasing.
This regulation will take effect from January 8, 2025 and requires Vietnamese exporters and authorities to strengthen product quality control measures, ensuring that food shipments exported to the EU strictly comply with food safety standards.
Strengthening inspections of agricultural products from Vietnam not only aims to protect public health in the EU but also provides an opportunity to improve the quality of exported products, thereby enhancing the reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products in the international market. Exporting enterprises need to proactively improve production processes and comply with food safety standards to meet the strict requirements of the EU market.
