Vinh airport runway is cracked, how are customers supported?

Vietnam Airlines canceled flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Vinh including VN1264, VN1265, VN1268, VN1269, VN1266, VN1267; between Hanoi and Vinh including VN1717, VN1718.

Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines has arranged for passengers connecting to Melbourne (Australia) to travel by road from Vinh to Tho Xuan to fly from Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa to Ho Chi Minh City, ensuring on-time flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne (Australia). In addition, the airline also supports rebooking tickets for passengers who need to change flight dates and times, board other flights and support road travel.

Vinh Airport is expected to resume operations tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways has adjusted the flight schedule from/to Vinh on July 3, 2023. Passengers have 3 supported options: Refund or change the flight from Vinh - Ho Chi Minh City - Vinh on July 3, 2023 to Thanh Hoa - Ho Chi Minh City - Thanh Hoa, with support for road travel costs of VND 200,000/passenger (Vinh - Thanh Hoa), or Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, with support for road travel costs of VND 300,000/passenger (Vinh - Hanoi). Road travel costs will be received at the departure airport.

Passengers can change their flight to the same route for free once within 72 hours (from the original departure time) if there are still seats available. During this time, Bamboo Airways recommends that passengers proactively update information from the airline's official channels.

Responding to VTC News on the afternoon of July 3, Mr. Dinh Viet Thang, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, said that he was on his way to Vinh airport to assess the damage to the runway and direct the repair work of this runway.

" On the morning of July 3, during the inspection, a concrete slab on the runway of Vinh airport was found to be broken. The airport management force reported it and we decided to stop operating Vinh airport for 24 hours. The repair work is being assigned to the Vietnam Airlines Corporation (ACV), and I am also on my way to see how the repair work is going. It is expected that tomorrow morning, July 4, Vinh airport will resume operations ," said Mr. Thang.

Mr. Hoang Van Thu, Director of Vinh International Airport, said that due to the hot weather, the airport runway was cracked, about 7-8m long, about 7cm deep, the cracked position was where the plane turned around. Another cause of the incident was that the plane's take-off point was so hot that the engine blew out the air, causing it to peel off.

After discovering the problem, the relevant units notified the temporary suspension of flights to conduct repairs and fix the problem. Currently, the contractor is resurfacing the runway where the crack appeared.

Vinh International Airport has a runway 2,400m long and 45m wide. The apron has an area of 38,438m², accommodating 7 aircraft parking positions. The passenger terminal started construction in April 2014 and was put into use in January 2015 by Vietnam Airports Corporation as the investor, with a total investment of nearly 1,200 billion VND.
