With the advice and support of the Economic Department (Dien Bien Phu City), 3 years ago, Mr. Ngo Xuan Duc's family, Huoi Pha village, Him Lam ward boldly invested in and built a model of growing melons in greenhouses and membrane houses, combined with the application of water-saving irrigation technology. In order to bring higher efficiency in agricultural production, Mr. Duc applied the method of growing hydroponic melons combined with membrane houses. Although the application of these methods is more expensive than other conventional melon growing methods, the application of high technology has contributed to significantly controlling pests and diseases and creating products that ensure food hygiene and safety.
Taking us to visit the high-tech melon growing model at home, Mr. Duc shared: “If this greenhouse model is implemented well, it will limit a lot of pesticides. Pesticides are rarely used, except when the fungus is too severe. Almost no insects can enter because the greenhouse is very closed… Cultivation using high-tech methods will contribute to creating safer agricultural products for consumers.”
In order to help farmers raise awareness, access new scientific and technical advances in production, develop the economy and increase income; since the beginning of the year, the Farmers Support Center (Provincial Farmers' Association) has organized 07 training conferences on agricultural knowledge for 560 farmers in the districts: Dien Bien, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Cha, Muong Ang, Tuan Giao, Tua Chua and Dien Bien Phu City. Thereby, helping people change their farming practices, new production thinking; gradually approach and apply high technology in agricultural production at the grassroots level. Along with helping people get closer to scientific and technical advances in agricultural production, the Farmers' Association has also implemented a number of new economic models, contributing to increasing income and promoting local agricultural development.

Mr. Trinh Van Toan, Deputy Director of the Farmer Support Center said: “Implementing the direction of the Provincial Farmers' Association Standing Committee on supporting farmers in developing agricultural economy, the Center has surveyed and built a model of growing Taiwanese apple trees in a safe direction on an area of 8,000m2 in Thanh Yen commune, Dien Bien district. Coordinated with the Office of Sustainable Development (Central Vietnam Farmers' Association) to organize the selection of locations to implement a model of applying biological products to develop black grape trees in Thanh Hung commune (Dien Bien district). The implementation of these models helps farmers in the province to access and apply new science and technology to local agricultural production”.
With a large area of cultivated land and advantages in barns and techniques, the Provincial Center for Agricultural Extension - Plant and Animal Breeding has implemented the Project "Application of scientific and technological advances in reproduction, breeding, planting and processing of feed to sustainably develop the herd of commercial buffalo in Dien Bien province". During the project implementation, new techniques will be applied in practice by the center's staff, such as: Artificial insemination process of Murrah male buffalo with Vietnamese female buffalo, VA-06 grass planting technique, feed processing technique for buffalo... After that, the center will evaluate the model and transfer the technique to the people.
Mr. Duc Minh Nhue, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Agricultural Extension - Plant and Animal Breeds, said: These projects are important to the development of agricultural production in the province. Because after the testing process, we have carefully researched and assessed the effectiveness when implementing them for the people. If the new models, new plants and animals are effective, we will transfer the technology to farmers to increase their income. Moreover, people have the opportunity to access models applying new varieties with high productivity and quality, gradually getting acquainted with the method of concentrated commodity production, bringing quality products to the market.

In recent times, many agricultural and forestry models have been implemented and evaluated for high economic efficiency such as: Pineapple growing model in Na Sang commune, green squash in 2 communes: Na Sang and Ma Thi Ho (Muong Cha district); cage fish farming model on irrigation lakes such as: Pa Khoang, Hong Khenh, Noong Luong; beekeeping model of Sam Mun honey bee cooperative (Dien Bien district); wild beekeeping, green squash growing in Cha Nua commune; clean vegetable growing model of Si Pa Phin High-tech Agricultural Cooperative, Si Pha Phin commune (Nam Po district)... Initially, the implementation of new economic models has received considerable support from professional agencies and local authorities. However, it is also an opportunity for people to have closer access to scientific and technical applications; thereby boldly converting crops and livestock to bring higher efficiency.
Ms. Chu Thi Thanh Xuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The application of new economic models in the province in the recent past is a step to assess the suitability for applying crops and livestock to the area. It can be affirmed that the application and testing of new economic development models, new science and technology in agricultural production is an important step to assess actual effectiveness. On that basis, it creates conditions for people to access new economic models, farming and livestock farming methods in accordance with scientific and technical advances; contributing to increasing income and getting rich on their own homeland...
With the potential and strength of developing key agricultural products, Dien Bien province has been making the most of its natural advantages combined with the application of scientific and technological advances. The results of successful pilot models will encourage individuals, businesses and cooperatives in the province to boldly apply scientific advances, confidently transform the structure of crops and livestock in agricultural production; gradually exploit and effectively use the potential of land and climate, help create jobs, increase income for people, and contribute to local economic development.
