On August 27, at the Guangxi - Vietnam Economic and Trade Cooperation Connection Conference held in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Wei Huaxiang, Chinese Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, said that during the recent visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China, the two countries signed 14 cooperation agreements, including export protocols for fresh coconuts, frozen durians and farmed crocodiles.
The only province bordering Vietnam by land and sea
More than 88% of coconuts, nearly 60% of durians and most of farmed crocodiles are produced in southern Vietnam. In order to turn the huge potential and cooperation agreements into tangible benefits, today's conference is a good platform for businesses from both countries to discuss ways to enhance cooperation.
Among them, focusing on enriching land, sea, air and rail corridors, improving the level of smart customs clearance and enhancing connectivity efficiency are key and important measures.
"Not long ago, I had a conversation with the Director of Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department Nguyen Hoang Tuan (also the former Director General of Lang Son Customs Department - PV) . Transporting durian and other agricultural products from Ho Chi Minh City to Qinzhou port in Guangxi province is at least 50% lower than transporting durian by road to Huu Nghi Pass and then to Guangzhou.
If the logistics cost of a container of durian from Vietnam to Guangzhou is 40,000 yuan, then shipping by sea is only 20,000 yuan. If there are multiple shipping routes, flexible shipping schedules and timely and stable shipping, it can effectively avoid congestion at border gates, improve efficiency and reduce cargo damage," said the Chinese Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. Liu Xiang, Deputy Director of the Department of Commerce of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, also emphasized that Guangxi is the only province in China that borders Vietnam by land and sea and is China's border, window for opening and cooperation with ASEAN.
The construction of the China-Vietnam border smart port is accelerating, and goods can achieve 24-hour uninterrupted smart customs clearance. It is expected that after completion, goods from Nanning to Hanoi, Vietnam will be delivered within 24 hours and to the four northern border provinces of Vietnam within 12 hours.
"China and Vietnam can rely on smart ports and logistics channels to work together to build cross-border industrial and supply chains, complementing each other's advantages and achieving mutual benefit," Liu Xiang stressed.
Cross-border industrial chain cooperation
Speaking to the business communities of the two countries, Mr. Liu Ning - Secretary of the Regional Party Committee, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, First Secretary of the Party Committee of the Guangxi Military Region - affirmed that the leadership of the two countries together to build the China - Vietnam Community of Shared Future is going deeper and more practical.
Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trading partner for 25 consecutive years; the trade turnover between Guangxi and Vietnam ranks second among Chinese provinces. At the same time, the logistics facilitation level of China-Vietnam land border gates has been continuously improved, and the construction of smart border gates between the two countries is being accelerated. Guangxi-Vietnam economic and trade cooperation has become a model and example for international and regional economic and trade cooperation.
Sending a message to the business communities of the two countries, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan said that the city is always interested in promoting cooperative relations with China - the city's largest trade partner and 16th largest investor.
In 2023, bilateral trade turnover reached about 23.3 billion USD and 732 investment projects remained in effect. Ho Chi Minh City has established friendly and cooperative relations with eight Chinese localities, including the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, since 2015.
"Today's investment and trade promotion conference will certainly contribute to further promoting the relationship between the two localities, while realizing the potential for cooperation," the vice chairman of the city People's Committee affirmed.
Although accounting for only 0.6% of the country's area, Ho Chi Minh City contributes nearly 20% of GDP and 25% of the country's budget revenue. With an economic scale of more than 60 billion USD and a population of about 13 million people, Ho Chi Minh City is home to a diverse and high-quality human resource, and is the economic locomotive of the country.
The Vietnamese and Chinese markets in general, and Ho Chi Minh City and Guangxi in particular, complement each other in terms of economic structure, geographical proximity convenient for transporting goods, and diversity in forms of trade exchange.
At the conference, businesses from both sides signed cooperation agreements on important projects. Ho Chi Minh City also introduced key projects and works calling for investment in the infrastructure sector.
Supported by a huge market of 1.4 billion people, China has always been Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable export market, accounting for 92.4% of Vietnam's total durian export turnover in the first half of 2024.
Through Guangxi Port, Dong Xing Port is the largest inland port for fruit imports in China, with 6 out of 10 imported durian varieties efficiently cleared to Chinese consumers.
In 2023, Guangxi's trade turnover with Vietnam reached 36 billion USD. As of June 2024, Guangxi had invested in Vietnam with a total of 185 enterprises and organizations, with a total investment capital of China of 140 million USD. Vietnam has invested in 140 enterprises in Guangxi.
