In the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying play-off round, Cambodia disappointed when they lost to Sri Lanka after two matches. In the first leg, Cambodia had a goalless draw away from home. Despite having home advantage in the second leg, coach Felix Dalmas and his team disappointed when they drew 2-2 after 120 minutes of play, then lost 2-4 in the penalty shootout.

This defeat led the Cambodian Football Federation to decide to change the head coach position in preparation for the 2024 ASEAN Cup taking place at the end of the year. The Cambodian Football Federation officially announced the departure of coach Felix Dalmas.

Coach Felix Dalmas has not had any outstanding achievements since starting to lead the Cambodian national team in April 2023. After 10 matches with the Cambodian national team, coach Felix Damas has won 2, drawn 2 and lost 6.

To prepare for the 2024 ASEAN Cup, the Cambodian Football Federation has temporarily appointed coach Koji Gyotoku as acting head coach of the national team. Coach Gyotoku has experience leading the Cambodian U23 team, so he is considered a suitable name for a short-term replacement.

Coach Koji Gyotoku's achievements are also not really outstanding. At the 2023 SEA Games held at home, U23 Cambodia, despite receiving high expectations, could not pass the group stage when only ranked 3rd.

Among the last four head coaches of the Cambodian national team, Koji Gyotoku is the third Japanese strategist. The two previous Japanese coaches who led the Cambodian national team were Keisuke Honda and Ryu Hirose.

In Southeast Asia, the Cambodian national team is the fourth team to change its head coach ahead of the 2024 ASEAN Cup. The three other teams that have also "changed generals" before are Myanmar, Laos and the Philippines.

At the ASEAN Cup 2024, the Cambodian national team will have to compete for a ticket to the semi-finals with strong opponents such as Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore.
