According to Cambodian media, FFC has assigned coach Koji Gyotoku (60 years old) to lead the Cambodian national team in an international friendly match with the Vietnamese team on March 19 at Binh Duong Stadium. Notably, the Japanese coach has not yet signed an official contract but has only been assigned temporary authority.
In September 2024, FFC fired coach Felix Dalmas due to poor performance in the preliminary round of the 2027 Asian Cup. Afterwards, Mr. Koji from the Cambodian U21 team was appointed as the interim coach to lead the Cambodian national team in the 2024 AFF Cup.
After the AFF Cup 2024, Mr. Koji's contract as interim coach expired and the Japanese coach returned to his old position as head of Cambodia's youth teams.
Coach Koji Gyotoku will lead the Cambodian national team to play a friendly match with the Vietnamese national team.
FFC General Secretary Ke Sareth confirmed to Cambodian media: "Coach Koji will be responsible for leading Cambodia in the friendly match against the Vietnamese team. However, it is unclear whether this strategist will continue to lead the Cambodian national team long-term or not." He also said that the position of head coach of Cambodia is still under consideration, and Koji is also one of the candidates.
Under the leadership of coach Koji, the Cambodian team was eliminated from the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024. In this tournament, the Cambodian team drew 2-2 with Malaysia, won 2-1 with Timor Leste, but lost 1-2 to Singapore and 2-3 to Thailand.
The match on March 19, 2025 will mark the first time the Cambodian team meets the Vietnamese team after 4 years since the group stage of the AFF Cup 2020. In the match taking place in December 2021, the Vietnamese team beat Cambodia 4-0.
Apart from the friendly match with the Vietnamese team, the Cambodian team has no official schedule in the FIFA tournament system after being eliminated from the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
However, with Pakistan sanctioned by FIFA and likely to withdraw from the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Cambodia could be selected as a replacement if the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decides to add another team.
