Health experts often recommend regular exercise because consistency is the key to long-term success. As a general rule, each person's weight loss goals will influence which workout schedule is best for them. However, if you exercise before breakfast, you're more likely to achieve better weight loss results.

Should exercise before breakfast

Although the time of day a person chooses to exercise will have little or no effect on how much weight they lose, there is evidence that exercising first thing in the morning may provide some benefits.

Experts at health group WebMD say that exercising before breakfast helps burn fat faster. "Get some moderate exercise before sitting down to eat in the morning," the organization says.

Exercising on an empty stomach can help you get better results. Sweating before breakfast can help you burn more body fat.

When fasting, the body relies on a number of backup mechanisms to ensure that the muscles and brain receive the nutrients they need for fuel.

Sports scientists at Nottingham Trent found that exercising on an empty stomach helped people burn around 70% more fat than those who exercised two hours after eating.

"Combining exercise and fasting may be an effective way to increase the benefits of exercise," explains Dr David Clayton, an expert in nutrition and exercise physiology at Nottingham Trent University. "We want to evaluate this over a longer period of time to explore ways to make fasting easier and more convenient for people."

Should lose weight gradually

While science highlights the difference in weight loss results related to time, experts don't recommend focusing too much on the timing of your workouts. Exercise alone isn't a practical way to lose fat, so you also need to consider what you're eating.

Standard dietary guidelines emphasize the importance of eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. At least half of a person's grain intake should come from whole grain sources.

WebMD reminds that it's best to lose weight gradually because you're less likely to gain it back. "Many experts believe that losing weight gradually is best," the health organization says.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, if you lose weight too quickly, you'll lose muscle, bone, and water instead of fat. The academy recommends losing between 1 and 2 pounds per week, and avoiding fad diets.
