On March 28, Phu Quoc National Park held a ceremony to receive the certificate of recognition as a Vietnamese heritage tree.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tiep - Director of Phu Quoc National Park (Kien Giang) - said that Phu Quoc National Park is a place to preserve and enhance the unique values of natural landscapes, ecosystems, and specific habitats; and to preserve the gene sources of endemic, endangered, and rare species.
The ecosystem and forest resources of the park are closely linked to the lives of islanders and the socio-economic development, security and defense of Phu Quoc.
Six ancient trees in this garden are recognized as Vietnam heritage trees, including: 2 Southern Vietnamese trees in Bai Thom commune (scientific name is Fagraea fragrans Roxb ), belonging to the family Fagraea fragrans. One tree has a base circumference of 13.5m, is 25m high, and is about 700 years old; the other tree has a base circumference of 12.6m, is 26m high, and is about 600 years old.

Two kơ nia trees in Ganh Dau commune, commonly known as cây trees (scientific name Irvingia malayana Oliv ). One tree has a base circumference of 15m, is 35m high, and is about 800 years old; the other tree has a base circumference of 13.6m, is 30m high, and is about 700 years old.
Two Phu Quoc Hopea trees in Ganh Dau commune (scientific name is Hopea Pierrei hance) , belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family.
One tree has a base circumference of 4.5m, is 24m high, and is about 250 years old; the other tree has a base circumference of 4.5m, is 24m high, and is about 250 years old.
"The ancient trees recognized today as Vietnam heritage trees aim to spread the unique values of nature, help with conservation work and better public awareness of forest protection, environmental protection, and the role of trees in life.
In addition, this is also to preserve the gene source of large trees, create an ecological environment, associated with historical and cultural values and develop local tourism," said Mr. Tiep.
Phu Quoc National Park is also a national natural heritage belonging to the Kien Giang World Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO in 2006. The park has a total area of special-use forests and protective forests of about 36,000 hectares.
