University president says 'student-centered' slogan is empty

Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung - Principal of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City - shared the above views at the announcement ceremony of the school's elite class training program on the morning of March 28.

"I have been to many universities and heard a lot about the slogan of putting learners at the center, I just laugh. A school enrolling 5-10 thousand students, where will the resources come from to put learners at the center? That is an inaccurate slogan, empty and a far-fetched goal because it cannot be realized" - Mr. Trung said.

Explaining this point of view further, Mr. Trung said that each student has different strengths and weaknesses. Students who are good at math but not good at English still have to try to meet the foreign language output standards. Students who are good at English but not good at math still have to learn too much about technology.

Students learn for the sake of the school's product, not for themselves. In other words, the school is product-centered, not student-centered.

"Putting students at the center is when the school knows what students need and promotes their strengths. The school can only do this when it has enough resources, facilities, teaching staff and a small number of students," Mr. Trung affirmed.

Mr. Trung added that when he became the manager of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City in 2018, he opposed this slogan because at that time the school did not have enough resources to do so. Currently, the school's resources are enough to do this.

"Only about 2% of the school's students participate in the elite class training program. The number of students is small, the school's resources are enough to implement student-centered training," said Mr. Trung.

According to the announcement of Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, the elite class training program will enroll the first batch in 2025. The program is 100% taught in English combined with courses directly instructed by professors and doctors from prestigious universities around the world.

The program will also train a second foreign language - Chinese, focusing on developing practical skills through real-life projects and learning at leading domestic and foreign businesses and banks.

Opportunities to study, exchange students and receive scholarships from prestigious universities such as University of Zurich (Switzerland), University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore (NUS)...

Students participate in internships and training at prestigious financial and banking corporations. Study with businesses and participate in in-depth seminars with leading experts in the industry.

Leaders of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City added that students of this program will study two days at school, two days at businesses, and one day participating in community activities in the first two years.

Two years later, students will also study the same schedule but will have internships at businesses with salaries based on their abilities.
