Ha Giang Many existing toilets in Dong Van district do not have a self-destructing system and are not separated into male and female toilets. Some schools do not even have standard toilets.
According to statistics from the Dong Van Department of Education and Training, schools in the district currently have 180 toilets for students and 63 for teachers. However, with more than 27,000 students and nearly 1,500 teachers, Dong Van currently lacks 88 toilets for students and 42 for teachers.
Sharing about this situation, a representative of the Dong Van Department of Education and Training said: "Right from the beginning of construction, the school did not have funds to build toilets at some school locations, leading to inadequacies in use later on."

In addition to the overload, many toilets in some schools are temporary or old but have degraded, unusable, do not have a self-destruct system, lack a water system, lack separate areas for male and female students, and for teachers. Many schools do not even have standard toilets.
"Not only are school facilities lacking, clean water sources are not guaranteed, there is no place to collect and treat waste... these are also difficult problems for school principals," added the Dong Van Department of Education and Training.
As a teacher at Ma Le Primary School for Ethnic Minorities, Mr. Cha My Dinh said that many times he and other teachers in the school had to personally repair the degraded toilets so that students could use them with peace of mind. "The toilets are not enough to meet the needs of the students. During the dry season, there is no water and the smell is so strong that students go to school irregularly," said Mr. Cha My Dinh.
Mr. Truong Du Dinh, a teacher at Pho Cao Secondary School, said that the school shares a campus with the primary school, and the facilities on both sides are lacking. Each school only has one restroom for students, not for teachers, so teachers have to use restrooms in the official residence and dormitory.

After surveying and understanding the wishes, the Hope Fund - VnExpress newspaper has planned to sponsor the construction of 20 new toilets for students and teachers in Dong Van district, where the number of poor households accounts for 61%. This is an activity within the School Hygiene project implemented by the fund from 2022.
In addition to building toilets, the project will continue to carry out activities to popularize school hygiene standards for students and teachers. The guidance documents along with the standard toilet system will become a model for the locality to replicate and synchronize at other schools in the region. From the school, the project hopes to influence changes in hygiene habits in the family and surrounding community. Changing living and hygiene habits will also help children integrate into urban life, where they will move to live and work later.
Children in Dong Van, Ha Giang will have better health and learning opportunities when the toilet system is improved. The Hope Foundation and Sanofi Vietnam are implementing the "School Hygiene" project, aiming to build at least 20 new toilets here. To join the fund, readers can learn more here.
