As a communist soldier with extensive experience in fighting and organizing revolutionary activities, comrade Tran Van Vi, former Secretary of the Provisional Southern Regional Party Committee, made important contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation in general and of My Tho province (now Tien Giang province) in particular. For these achievements, he was awarded the First Class Victory Medal, the Second Class Anti-American Resistance Medal, and the National Citadel Badge.

THE EXAMPLE OF THE LOYALTY AND INDOMINANCE OF A COMMUNIST SOLDIER IN A COLONIALIST PRISON

Comrade Tran Van Vi, alias Dan Ton Tu, was born on May 2, 1905 in Song Thuan village, Chau Thanh district, My Tho province (now Song Thuan commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province). As a person with a passionate patriotism and a spirit of revolutionary struggle against oppression and exploitation under the rule of French colonialism, when he came of age, comrade Tran Van Vi became enlightened about the revolution, joined the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association of My Tho province, then became a member of the Party Committee of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association, in charge of the Youth Union.

In September 1929, he was admitted to the Annam Communist Party (one of the three predecessor organizations of the Communist Party of Vietnam). Then, from December 1929 to May 1930, he was Secretary of the Chau Thanh District Party Committee (My Tho Province). In 1931, he was transferred to the My Tho Provincial Party Committee and participated in leading the revolutionary struggle movement of the people in My Tho Province.

During his participation in the revolution, he was arrested by the French colonialists many times. The first time, he was arrested by the French colonialists and sentenced to imprisonment at the Big Prison (Saigon), then exiled to Ha Tien. In October 1932, he was arrested by the enemy for the second time, exiled to O Cap (Vung Tau) and released in October 1934.

With a strong political will, from November 1934 to April 1935, he continued to work at the Provisional Regional Party Committee of Southern Vietnam and held many important positions: Member of the Provisional Regional Party Committee, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provisional Regional Party Committee and Secretary of the My Tho Provincial Party Committee. He was arrested for the third time by the French colonialists and exiled to Ba Ra (now Son Giang Ward, Phuoc Long Town, Binh Phuoc Province).

During his capture by the enemy, despite being brutally tortured and subjected to extremely harsh exile regimes, facing malaria, malnutrition, etc., comrade Tran Van Vi still shone with revolutionary ideology, the steadfast and indomitable heart of a communist soldier, loyal to the Party, and determined to keep the organization's secrets.

Comrade Tran Van Vi and other communist prisoners overcame physical pain, persevered, endured and "turned prison into a revolutionary school" to study and cultivate themselves, cultivate Marxist-Leninist theory, the Party's ideals and revolutionary lines with a strong belief in returning to their homeland, to the revolution, to the people to stand side by side, continuing on the path of national liberation.

After the Japanese fascists overthrew the French colonialists (March 9, 1945), comrade Tran Van Vi and a number of other comrades escaped from Ba Ra prison to return to revolutionary activities. On March 20, 1945, communists from the Liberation group such as Nguyen Thi Thap, Nguyen Van Canh, Nguyen Van Chim... met in Xoai Hot (Thanh Phu commune, Chau Thanh district, My Tho province) to establish the Provisional Southern Regional Party Committee, electing comrade Tran Van Vi as Secretary of the Regional Party Committee (March 1945 - May 1945). It is known that this Regional Party Committee is often called the Liberation Regional Party Committee. By January 1948, he was Deputy Head of the Political Department of Zone 8, in charge of the militia.

OUTSTANDING IMPRESSIONS IN THE REVOLUTIONARY STRUGGLE MOVEMENT

With the responsibility and qualities of a dynamic and creative leader, comrade Tran Van Vi made important contributions to the revolutionary process in My Tho province and the common revolutionary cause of the whole nation.

Since holding the position of Chau Thanh District Party Secretary, comrade Tran Van Vi has made great efforts to build grassroots Party organizations after the Communist Party of Vietnam was founded (February 3, 1930). From then on, Party cells in Vinh Kim, Song Thuan, Kim Son, Binh Trung communes... were successively established, becoming the core nucleus to lead the people's revolutionary struggle movement.

Together with the My Tho Provincial Party Committee, he participated in leading the revolutionary struggle movement of the people, typically two struggles to celebrate International Labor Day (May 1, 1931) and Anti-Imperialist War Day (August 1, 1931) with the active participation of thousands of people, taking place very enthusiastically and fiercely, combining many forms such as: rallies, demonstrations, leaflet distribution, hanging banners, hanging red hammer and sickle flags... fighting against fines, demanding salary increases, reducing working hours, reducing rent, increasing planting wages... shaking the ruling apparatus of the colonial government from the province to the grassroots.

During the revolutionary transitions, especially the preparation stage for the August Revolution in 1945, the Provisional Southern Regional Party Committee, with comrade Tran Van Vi as Secretary, led the work of mobilizing revolutionary masses well.

Specifically, the Liberation Newspaper was used as the mouthpiece of the Regional Party Committee, the newspaper was tasked with propagating the revolution, guiding the struggle movement for the entire Party Committee and people of the South. At the same time, the Regional Party Committee also published the Independence Newspaper to serve the revolutionary mobilization work.

With the political qualities, ethics and leadership capacity of comrade Tran Van Vi, he directed the establishment of the Party organization system in the localities. Since then, the Provisional Party Committee of Southern Vietnam has organized 10 Provisional Provincial Party Committees and 6 Provisional Party Executive Committees in the provinces in Southern Vietnam. This is a new development step of the revolutionary movement in Southern Vietnam under the leadership of the Liberation Party Committee.

In addition, comrade Tran Van Vi assigned the Regional Party Committee members to be in charge of mass mobilization, building political and armed forces, purchasing weapons, and military training... to prepare all necessary conditions for the successful August Revolution.

In February 1951, he attended the 2nd National Party Congress in Viet Bac, then held the positions of Regiment Commander, Secretary of the Inter-branch, and Southern Logistics Department. After the Geneva Agreement, from July 1954 to April 1974, he held the positions of Rent Reduction Team Leader, Land Reform Team Leader in Bac Giang, Cu Van (Thai Nguyen province), and Head of the Southern Regional Department of the Central Party History Research Committee.

After the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975), he retired in Binh Duc commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province. On August 2, 1989, comrade Tran Van Vi passed away.

With his loyalty to the Party and the people, comrade Tran Van Vi will forever be an example for the revolutionary generation to follow. Through that, he will educate the spirit of patriotism and national pride; encourage and motivate cadres, party members and people of all walks of life to actively compete in studying, working, working and fighting, contributing to building our country to be "more decent and more beautiful", realizing the goal of "rich people, strong country, democracy, fairness and civilization".
