Freeze the transfer market

It is rare for a mid-season transfer window in European football to be as quiet as this year. No contract worth 30 million pounds or more has been seen. Nearly a week before the "winter window" closed, the total amount spent on players in the Premier League had not yet exceeded 50 million pounds. Last year, Chelsea alone spent more than 200 million pounds on Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Malo Gusto in the mid-season transfer window. In total, "The Blues" bought 8 new players. Arsenal spent 60 million pounds at that time. Liverpool strengthened Cody Gakpo for 45 million pounds. Looking back at Philippe Coutinho, Luis Diaz, Daniel Sturridge, Virgil Van Dijk..., people even have to talk about Liverpool's very magnificent mid-season transfer tradition. This year, coach Juergen Klopp's team has not signed any contracts.

The transfer market is "frozen" in the Premier League, which in turn affects the major tournaments around it. Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga, Serie A want to have bustling transfer activities, first of all, they have to sell their best players to England at high prices. Now all are "inactive", although many big teams are having problems with personnel and expertise. Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Napoli... all need to strengthen their players, depending on each team's own circumstances.

Both the Asian Cup and the African Cup are taking place, coinciding almost exactly with the mid-season transfer window. And those are the continents that usually supply the best players for the "winter window". Now, of course, the rising stars of African and Asian football must prioritize focusing on professional issues in their continental tournaments, instead of negotiating and finding a new "destination". The more important reason why the transfer market has almost frozen in English football: the heavy penalty (minus 10 points, for violating financial fair play regulations) for Everton is still "hot" - other clubs can look at that and deter themselves. Of course, each team is different, but in general, most teams in the Premier League are on the brink of violating financial fair play regulations. People do not dare to spend as much as before.

In theory, the fundamental difference between the winter transfer window and the summer transfer window is the "firefighting" factor. The status of a star injury, the bankruptcy of "Plan A", or some other important reason can push a strong team to the middle of the table or an average team to the relegation zone. The usual reaction is to quickly strengthen the squad in a short transfer month in the middle of the season, to save the situation. This year, the Premier League has not had any significant changes. Chelsea, MU and Newcastle are all only in the middle of the table, but that is actually normal. Who is surprised by the decline of Chelsea and MU anymore? In the group above, Liverpool threatens to overthrow Man.City while Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa are all stable in high positions. "In order", so almost no team needs major changes. This year's Premier League has had few coach dismissals for the same reason: every team is in the standard position. Last year was different: teams were changing coaches one after another, and new coaches always needed to buy new players to fit in.
