Today (December 31), the Vietnam national team gathered to prepare for the 2023 Asian Cup. The team's medical team also conducted a review, examination and assessment of the health status of the summoned players.
The results showed that three players, Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Duc Chien and Nguyen Thanh Nhan, did not recover in time to be able to accompany the team in the continental arena.
Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam and defender Nguyen Duc Chien are both recovering from old injuries. Van Lam has an Achilles tendon injury, Duc Chien has an injury to his left transverse pubic bone, while Thanh Nhan suffered an ankle injury in a recent match in the National First Division, and is expected to take about 3 weeks to return to training.
3 players leave Vietnam team due to injury
After receiving reports from the team doctors, coach Philippe Troussier decided not to call up Van Lam, Duc Chien and Thanh Nhan to the team. The French coach wants to ensure the safety of these players, and at the same time hopes that they will have time to rest so that they can soon reach their best physical condition, aiming to gather in March 2024 to continue competing in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Previously, two players on the Vietnam national team's training list had to say goodbye because they did not have enough time to recover from their injuries. They were defender Nguyen Thanh Chung and midfielder Hoang Van Toan.
To ensure the team's depth, coach Philippe Troussier then called up the additional defender duo Ho Tan Tai and Bui Tien Dung.
It is not impossible that in the near future, Coach Troussier will select some outstanding players from the U.23 Vietnam team, who are currently training in Hanoi, to strengthen the team.
The Vietnamese team will train at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center until January 5 before departing for Qatar for training ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup. During the training period, the team will have a friendly match as a "rehearsal" with the Kyrgyzstan team on January 9.
