On February 3, Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital announced that the hospital's doctors had successfully treated a 65-year-old male patient who had completely lost his ability to function, thanks to interdisciplinary cooperation and online consultation with Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC).
Mr. NHD (residing in Ward 8, Bac Lieu City) has a medical history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis, cerebral infarction, pacemaker, and thoracic aortic dissection surgery. Previously, Mr. D. also suffered from post-operative sepsis, and his family had to transfer him to Thailand for treatment for 6 months. During the treatment, the patient's condition worsened several times, such as kidney failure, acute heart failure, etc. The patient now needed an endotracheal tube to breathe, lost the ability to swallow naturally, and relied on a nasogastric tube for eating and drinking. Due to lack of exercise and long-term tube placement, the patient's muscle strength and swallowing ability were very weak.
NHD patient before being hospitalized completely lost daily functions, now has recovered and can walk
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Internal Medicine Department, Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that when receiving patient D., the problem of infection and the risk of underlying diseases in patient D. was the biggest difficulty. Especially when the patient is old, due to coughing and poor swallowing ability, the heart disease will become more severe, blood pressure will skyrocket, and the heart rate will be fast, even though a pacemaker has been placed. Weak resistance and prolonged living in the hospital environment also make the patient susceptible to infection, creating negative effects on health.
According to Dr. Dung, the hospital coordinated with 4 departments: internal medicine, nutrition, rehabilitation and ear - nose - throat to treat the patient. In addition, remote consultation and consultation with doctors at Cho Ray Hospital were also conducted. After about 2 months of treatment, Mr. D's health gradually recovered well.
Currently, Mr. D. can walk normally, has no more difficulty breathing, and has recovered over 95% of his function, can walk, eat independently by mouth, and talk.
