Changing the mindset, working methods, and empowering women and children are the key contents of Project 8 on “Implementing gender equality and solving urgent problems for women and children”. The model of the Da Trang Green Tea Cooperative Group in Luong Son Commune, Yen Lap District, Phu Tho Province is an economic model that shows that ethnic minority women here have changed their mindset and working methods.
Converting individual business to cooperative group
Ms. Dang Thi Binh, the "captain" of the Da Trang Green Tea Cooperative in Luong Son Commune, Yen Lap District, Phu Tho Province , is a Muong ethnic. She shared that in the past, due to her family's economic difficulties, she could not continue her university studies. In 1991, she married and became the daughter-in-law of "Da Trang", and the couple made a living from farming.
When seeing that tea growers mainly sell fresh tea, intensive cultivation according to individual models, each family sells for their own benefit. Few people care about making finished tea or promoting the product to get a higher price, promoting the local tea brand. That makes the economic conditions of local women precarious.
Ms. Binh and tea products of the Cooperative Group
From the concern and thinking of how to develop the family's economy and help women in the area have a more stable income, Ms. Binh, together with her husband and family, planned to invest in making a living from tea. "Because tea is a long-standing plant, famous in Phu Tho, we must definitely get rich from tea and make the name of Phu Tho tea even more famous" - Ms. Binh confided.
After many challenges and ups and downs, the Da Trang Green Tea Cooperative model was born with 11 members, led by Ms. Binh. Everyone works every day, with an average income of 4-5 million VND/month. More specifically, the members of the group are all ethnic minorities, in addition to making tea, they also raise livestock and poultry.
From the Cooperative model, women see the value of collective work and have a broader view of business strategies and product development for their hometown. Members realize that they can do more than the traditional way. Women are very proactive in production, business, and product promotion. Most of them can use social networks to share products with consumers.
The women in the cooperative are completing product packaging.
The cooperative operates on a model of purchasing tea from households in the area and neighboring areas to process into dry tea products, registering labels and brands. Instead of using plastic bags and selling by the ounce or weight as the women usually do, the products are vacuum-packed.
Currently, Luong Son green tea products have been certified as high-quality agricultural products, 3-star OCOP products in 2023.
The cooperative is supported by the Commune Women's Union and is interested by local authorities, creating conditions for deeper participation in the province's tea market.
Together with women, we develop and spread the reputation of local specialties far and wide.
Recently, Ms. Binh and many other women members of the Women's Union of Luong Son commune have been allowed by the Women's Union of Luong Son commune to participate in training courses on economic skills, propaganda about Project 8 and guidance on implementing effective economic models. At that time, she and the Cooperative Group had more information and knowledge to do business more proactively, not just relying on what is available.
Along with that, she dreams of being able to create a brand of higher quality products for the locality and create jobs and stable income for many female members and local people.
Products achieve 3-star OCOP in 2023
Ms. Binh shared: "In addition to the support of the Commune Women's Union, the Cooperative Group also received support from the Yen Lap District Women's Union in registering barcodes, packaging, labels, training on tea tree care, and capacity building for 3 members of the Cooperative Management Board."
It can be seen that the model of Da Trang Green Tea Cooperative has helped members and people develop the economy, grow from tea trees, create jobs and stable income, to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, contributing with the Party Committee and the government of Luong Son commune to build new rural areas.
Going through the "all beginnings are difficult" period, with close coordination in leadership, direction, operation and implementation of Project 8 from district to commune, the Women's Union of Luong Son commune has made efforts and determination to change thinking and working methods, enhance the power of women and children, including models that bring sustainable income to women.
