In 2003, UNESCO recognized Phong Nha - Ke Bang as a World Natural Heritage based on geological and geomorphological criteria. In 2015, with its outstanding values, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park continued to be honored as a World Natural Heritage for the second time with the criteria: ecosystem and biodiversity.
20 years ago, at the 27th Annual Conference held in Paris (France), the World Heritage Committee (WHC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park of Vietnam as a World Natural Heritage with geological and geomorphological criteria, specifically representing the process of earth formation and geological values. On July 3, 2015, the members of the WHC agreed to add criterion ix - outstanding values representing the evolutionary and developmental processes of terrestrial ecosystems, criterion x - possessing the most significant natural habitat for biodiversity conservation, collectively referred to as criteria: ecosystem and biodiversity. Over the years, major international news agencies and newspapers such as: The New York Times, The Guardian, The Mirror, The Huffington Post... and more than 50 magazines around the world have continuously published many articles praising. Many activities to celebrate June 27, information from the Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (NP) said that on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Phong Nha - Ke Bang being recognized and honored by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage (July 5, 2003 - July 5, 2023), Quang Binh province organized many celebratory events such as:

The online contest "Learning about the conservation and promotion of the value of the World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park" will take place on June 14, June 21 and June 28 on the website: quangbinh.gov.vn or Facebook fanpage: Tuoi Tre Quang Binh. The award ceremony will take place on June 30 at the Quang Binh Provincial Children's House. Another outstanding event is the program "Ao Dai - Returning to the heritage of Quang Binh" at 8:00 p.m. on June 30 in the center of Phong Nha town, Bo Trach district. And especially, the international scientific conference on this World Natural Heritage with the theme "Promoting the value of the World Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park in the trend of integration and sustainable development" will be held for 2 days (June 30 and July 1 in Dong Hoi city). This workshop is expected to attract about 300 delegates from central ministries, branches, UNESCO, IUCN, international organizations, experts, and scientists from home and abroad.

In the series of outstanding events above are the accompanying welcoming activities: Press conference to promote and propagate; publishing bilingual publications in Vietnamese and English about the International Scientific Conference on the World Natural Heritage of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park; publishing the book "The Wonders of Quang Binh Caves"; producing and broadcasting the bilingual documentary film in Vietnamese and English "Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park after 20 years of being recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage"; publishing a special issue "Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park after 20 years of being recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage"; visual propaganda by large panels and banners on main roads, central areas, etc.
Talking to PLVN, Mr. Pham Hong Thai - Director of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board affirmed: "The recognition of the World Natural Heritage is a milestone that not only affirms the outstanding global values of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, but also acknowledges Vietnam's efforts in preserving and conserving intact natural resources".

“This series of practical activities, in addition to the meaning of the welcome anniversary, also aims to promote extensive propaganda work in the political system and the masses to fully understand the value and position of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park for the socio-economic development of the locality, region as well as the whole country. From there, awareness and responsibility to join hands in preserving, conserving and promoting the values of the World Natural Heritage" - Mr. Thai added. After 20 years of being recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage, tourism development activities have achieved outstanding results. This place is the "heart" of Quang Binh tourism and is known as the capital of adventure tourism to explore caves and mountains. Over the past 20 years, 17 tourist routes and destinations have been put into operation. In which, conquering Son Doong - the largest cave in the world is an international-class product. This heritage has welcomed nearly 10 million visitors, with revenue from entrance fees reaching 1,742 billion VND. In scientific research and rescue activities, 43 new species have been discovered (5 plant species, 38 animal species); 425 caves, with a total length of 243km have been surveyed and measured; 1,439 wild animals, 1,575kg of orchids have been rescued and cared for, 1,335 animals have been released into the natural environment; 64 wild animals have been rescued, including 7 Indochinese tigers; the rescue success rate is up to 85%.

Propaganda work on heritage resource protection was focused with 1,565 visits to 876 villages, reaching 29,628 people; 5 painting competitions for students, publishing 60,000 publications; the professional force of the National Park Management Board mobilized people in the buffer zones to hand over 126 homemade guns and 23 rare wild animals. Forest protection and protection of Phong Nha - Ke Bang Heritage resources were given special attention. Over the past 20 years, the Park's rangers have organized 41,000 forest patrols with a total duration of 45,500 days on a distance of 211,240km; 42,596 traps were dismantled, 579 camps were destroyed, and 4,158 illegal intruders were expelled from the forest.
