Eleven years after being fired and dumped by her boyfriend, British tourist Claire Sturzaker has visited 40 countries.

Claire Sturzaker was fired and her boyfriend broke up with her the week before her 30th birthday. Eleven years on from that traumatic event, Claire is now a full-time travel blogger. She has visited 41 countries to date. "Starting from scratch gave me the confidence to realize that I could start again and be okay," the 41-year-old says of that "nightmare week."

In 2012, Claire was a wedding planner in Manchester. She didn’t enjoy her job, so she was “not surprised” to be made redundant. But her sadness was compounded by the fact that her boyfriend had broken up with her at the same time. Claire faced an uncertain future. She found herself with nothing: no love, no job, no home.

After the panic attack, the girl realized the freedom in her situation and decided "this is the perfect opportunity to travel." With enough money to spend for three months, Claire booked a one-way flight to Barcelona, Spain - where she studied abroad as a student.

Claire found a job and stayed in Barcelona for a few years. Her passion for travel continued to grow. Claire quit her job in 2015 and backpacked to South America. She stayed for a year. “If I hadn’t been fired in the UK, I wouldn’t have had the courage to quit my job in Spain,” she says. During her time in South America, Claire “watched the sunrise at Machu Picchu and was on a boat down the Amazon.”

After a year of backpacking, Claire realized she wanted to continue this career forever and started a travel blog, sharing her personal experiences and travel tips, such as "how to travel everywhere for free". She always thanks her "nightmare" of 11 years ago for helping her live the life she wants.

"That incident was the push I needed to change for a better life," Claire said.
