American universities advise international students and lecturers to avoid leaving the US even if they have green cards.

The announcement was made by the Ivy League university, in the context that a professor at this school after a trip to Lebanon was deported when re-entering the US.

Brown University, one of the top schools in the US and a member of the prestigious Ivy League , sent an email to the entire university on March 16, advising non-US citizens, including those with visas or green cards, to postpone or reschedule international trips. The potential changes to the travel ban and re-entry requirements “could impact the ability to return to the US as planned,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

The announcement came after Dr. Rasha Alawieh, an assistant professor at the university and a kidney transplant specialist, was arrested and deported a few days ago. Ms. Alawieh, who had lived in the US for six years and had an H-1B visa sponsored by Brown University, faced the same situation when she re-entered the US after a trip to her home country of Lebanon. On the evening of March 17, more than 100 people gathered outside the Rhode Island State Capitol to protest in support of the female doctor, according to AP .

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Ms. Alawieh had returned to Lebanon to attend the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah organization.

Ms. Alawieh told immigration officials that she did not support Hezbollah. According to prosecutors, Ms. Alawieh said she followed Nasrallah for his religious and spiritual teachings, not for his politics.

Earlier, several other US universities also issued warnings about travel during the spring break in the US, which begins next week. Among them, Dartmouth College, an Ivy League institution, warned faculty, staff and international students about the possibility of the US government issuing an entry ban. Currently, the US government is considering restricting entry for citizens of 43 countries .

Columbia University advises international students to “exercise caution” when traveling abroad. It also asks people from countries previously banned from entering the United States, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen, to “avoid nonessential travel outside the United States.”

Previously, a series of American universities, including leading schools, announced that they would stop recruiting lecturers and cut down on doctoral enrollment . This move is believed to be so that American universities can ensure a stable financial situation after the Trump administration continuously issued many related regulations, such as significantly cutting the funding allocated by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

According to statistics from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in 2023, there were 31,310 Vietnamese studying in the US, ranking 6th in the number of international students. This is the first time the number of Vietnamese studying in the US has reached more than 30,000 after 2 years below 30,000. However, if we consider the number of international students in high schools alone, Vietnam ranks 5th with 3,187 people, behind China, South Korea, Mexico, and Spain.
