Today, March 18, in Hanoi, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held a ceremony to announce the publication of the monograph " 50 years of Vietnam - Japan relations (1973 - 2023)", comprehensively introducing the history of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The book was compiled within the framework of the "JICA Chair" program with the cooperation of authors from the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), President of Vietnam Japan University - Professor Furuta Motoo, and Honorary Professor Tran Van Tho of Waseda University.

The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Vietnam Ito Naoki; Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) Dang Xuan Thanh and about 100 researchers and lecturers in the field of Japanese studies and Japanese language teaching. A book donation ceremony was also held on this occasion.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Ito said: "In 2023, Japan-Vietnam relations have developed into a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world. To continue promoting Japan-Vietnam relations in the future, the lessons learned from 50 years of history recorded in this book will become an important compass."
Mr. Dang Xuan Thanh expressed his gratitude for JICA's cooperation. He said: "This book not only summarizes the events of the past 50 years of Japan-Vietnam relations but also serves as valuable academic material for researchers and educators of both countries."

The monograph 50 years of Vietnam - Japan relations (1973 - 2023) is compiled with consideration of the international relations context of the world and the Asian region, dividing the history of Vietnam - Japan relations in 50 years into 3 stages. The book provides an overview from the political - diplomatic, economic and cultural - social perspectives. At the same time, the book mentions the achievements, prospects, challenges as well as policy implications in the relationship between the two countries over the past 50 years.
Donate books to universities and research institutes
JICA said that currently, in Vietnam, there is no comprehensive introductory document on the history of Japan-Vietnam relations. Therefore, the publication of this book is expected to contribute to expanding the source of Japanese research documents in Vietnam.
In the coming time, the book will be given free of charge to key universities and research institutes in Vietnam through the Northeast Asian Research Institute with the expectation of effectively supporting teaching and research.

JICA launched the "JICA Chair" program in 2020 with the aim of sharing experiences and lessons from Japan's modernization process and development cooperation with developing countries. The program targets leading universities in partner countries. In Vietnam, the program has been implemented since 2021. The project to publish a monograph on the history of Vietnam-Japan relations by the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies (VASS) is part of this program.
In the coming time, JICA will continue to cooperate with partners to promote research on Japan in Vietnam as well as support Vietnam's sustainable socio-economic development.
