Previously, voters in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said that people and tourists are facing many difficulties when traveling between Con Dao and the mainland. Voters requested to soon implement the project to upgrade and expand Con Dao airport.
While waiting for the upgrading and expansion of Con Dao airport, it is recommended that there be solutions to encourage businesses and companies to invest and exploit the Con Dao - Saigon and Con Dao - Can Tho routes so that there is no longer a "monopoly" situation like the present, in order to reduce difficulties, meet the travel needs of people and tourists, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the locality in the coming time.
The Ministry of Transport is reviewing and working with the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to agree on an investment plan for Con Dao Airport.
Responding to this issue, according to the Ministry of Transport, the investment policy for the project to renovate and upgrade the runway and taxiway of Con Dao Airport has been approved by the Ministry of Transport.
During the feasibility study, based on the proposal of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and the direction of the Government leaders, the Ministry of Transport assigned relevant units and international consultants to review, research and develop a comprehensive investment plan, synchronizing the items of Con Dao Airport.
In September 2024, based on the research results of international consultants, the Ministry of Transport reported to the Prime Minister the investment plan to develop Con Dao Airport.
Accordingly, in order to invest in upgrading and expanding Con Dao Airport to ensure safe, effective and synchronous operation of medium-range aircraft, the Ministry of Transport has proposed to continue to organize and implement investment in renovating and upgrading runways and taxiways from public investment capital to soon put medium-range aircraft into operation, serving the travel needs of the people.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has just issued a document requesting the Ministry of Transport to urgently deploy, review, research and soon report to the Prime Minister the investment plan for the Con Dao Airport project, and report to the Prime Minister in October 2024.
At the same time, assign the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to develop a project to invest, manage and exploit Con Dao Airport under the PPP method, and report to the Prime Minister for permission to implement.
Implementing the Prime Minister's recent direction, the Ministry of Transport will continue to review and work with the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to agree on the investment plan for Con Dao Airport in October 2024, as well as report to the Prime Minister for consideration and early approval of the project to upgrade and expand Con Dao Airport, meeting the needs of air transport, tourism, and supporting local socio-economic development.
Regarding the encouragement of airlines to exploit flights to Con Dao, the Ministry of Transport informed that due to infrastructure limitations, Con Dao Airport is currently unable to receive medium-range aircraft (such as A319/A320) but can only receive aircraft such as ATR72, Embraer E190. Therefore, exploitation to Con Dao is somewhat limited.
After Bamboo Airways stopped operating the Hanoi - Con Dao route, currently only Vietnam Airlines and VASCO (a branch of Vietnam Airlines) are using ATR72 aircraft to operate the route connecting Con Dao - Ho Chi Minh City and Con Dao - Can Tho.
To improve civil aviation operations, the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam have requested and facilitated Vietnam Airlines to increase operations to Con Dao, as well as encouraged other airlines to seek aircraft types suitable for the infrastructure of Con Dao Airport.
Thereby, contributing to increasing the supply capacity on flight routes, adding more choices of aviation services for passengers, better meeting people's travel needs.
