Fear of career being ruined by injury.
Striker Bui Vi Hao is the latest name to bring bad news to coach Kim Sang-sik, as he has been informed that he has torn his ankle ligaments. Even if everything goes smoothly, the star player will need 6-8 months to recover and return to the field.

Bui Vi Hao (number 15)'s injury is a loss for the Vietnamese national team.
Previously, the Vietnamese national team had lost three key players – Nguyen Xuan Son, Nguyen Van Toan, and Ho Tan Tai – after the 2024 AFF Cup. Notably, these were all serious injuries requiring a long recovery time.
As for Ho Tan Tai, he suffered a torn ligament in his right knee and is expected to be out of action for up to 8 months. Striker Nguyen Van Toan also suffered a similar injury. The star player from Nam Dinh FC sustained a knee ligament injury. Although the injury is not as severe as Tan Tai's, he is still unable to return to playing.
As for Xuan Son, he suffered fractures to his tibia and fibula. According to doctors' calculations, the Brazilian star may have to sit on the bench for up to 9 months, counting from the time he underwent surgery.
But these are just the most recent and serious injury cases for the Vietnamese national team.
Looking further back, since coach Park Hang-seo took over in 2017, many stars who were once expected to be the future of Vietnamese football have been "buried" by serious injuries. The names that have left the most regret for fans include Doan Van Hau, Dinh Trong, and Xuan Truong.
Physical strength is depleted.
Significantly, all of the aforementioned injuries did not occur randomly but had a cause. The most important reason was that they had to work too hard.

Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Van Toan suffered injuries after the 2024 AFF Cup.
Take the case of striker Nguyen Xuan Son. Since becoming eligible to play for the Vietnamese national team, coach Kim Sang-sik allowed him to play a full 394 minutes, meaning he played every minute until he suffered an injury.
Even in matches where the Vietnamese team had almost secured victory and scoring was no longer the ultimate goal, the South Korean coach still kept this star player on the field.
At the time, many fans were unhappy with how Kim Jong-un was exhausting Xuan Son, despite him being a player with excellent physical fitness.
Everyone knows that before joining the Vietnamese national team, Xuan Son had already gone through a period of playing intensely for Nam Dinh Club in multiple competitions simultaneously.
Of course, Xuan Son's serious injury wasn't the fault of coach Kim Sang-sik, as he fell on his own. But clearly, human physical strength and endurance have limits. When those limits are exceeded, injuries are inevitable.
Minimize injuries from the start of training.
Returning to the current situation of the Vietnamese national team, coach Kim Sang-sik and his players will first participate in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, the youth teams will compete in the 2026 U23 Asian Championship qualifiers (September 2025) and the 33rd SEA Games (December 2025).
At the national team level, coach Kim Sang-sik will certainly be without Xuan Son, Ho Tan Tai, and possibly even Van Toan due to injuries. This is a huge blow for the Vietnamese national team, especially with their upcoming crucial match against Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Bui Vi Hao is currently the best attacking star in Vietnamese youth football. Therefore, the absence of this star in the 2026 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games will certainly affect the team's performance.
From a strategist's perspective, Mr. Phan Thanh Hung stated: "Player injuries can happen at any time. This is the nature of high-intensity training and competition. Preventing injuries is very difficult because it depends on the individual player's skills and abilities."
But there are also some measures to mitigate this, such as having scientific training methods, diet, and nutritional supplements. In addition, coaches should also have alternative plans and rotation options for each position."
According to this veteran coach, coaches also need to focus on building a deep squad. Each position on the field should have a capable substitute who can replace players when needed without significantly impacting the team's performance. This will help reduce the burden on key players and prevent unfortunate injuries.
Elaborating on this issue, sports doctor Pham Hung said: "In my opinion, injury prevention should begin during training, not just when players step onto the field. Injuries to players stem from two main causes: accumulated fatigue and direct collisions on the field."
To minimize injuries, it's crucial to establish a sound system from the start, including proper exercise, recovery, and nutrition. Even poor eating and sleeping habits can easily lead to injuries during strenuous training the following day.
"Normally, players only train at an average level, but as the match day approaches, the intensity is pushed very high, leading to overtraining. This is also a contributing factor to injuries, so we need to plan accordingly."
"Even during the preparation process, we must be meticulous and professional, not wait until a player gets injured before sending them for treatment, which is unscientific," Mr. Pham Hung said, adding that currently, our players' health monitoring is still not good. Therefore, the early detection of injury signs to prevent them is limited.
According to a football expert, poor-quality stadium surfaces are also one of the causes of player injuries, as they put significant pressure on muscles and joints. Therefore, investment in upgrading infrastructure is necessary, especially national stadiums. Clubs should also prioritize training and playing on standard-quality pitches to minimize risks.
