DTO - The movement of using indigenous microorganisms (IMO) is spreading strongly throughout An Nhon commune, Chau Thanh district. This is a welcome signal, showing the positive change of farmers in applying sustainable, environmentally friendly farming methods. Behind the initial success of this model is the great contribution of Mr. Huynh Huu Thuan - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Nhon commune, a dedicated person who has worked closely with the people in the process of implementing and developing the unique IMO tourism model...

Mr. Huynh Huu Thuan - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Nhon commune (2nd from left) visited the composting model of Mr. Nguyen Van Duc in Tan Phu hamlet, An Nhon commune.

From pilot model to widespread movement

In August 2023, An Nhon was selected as a pilot commune to implement the model "Dong Thap farmers reuse organic household waste and agricultural by-products to create biological products for production". Realizing the great potential and benefits of IMO yeast in soil improvement, increasing crop productivity and protecting the environment, Mr. Huynh Huu Thuan - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Nhon commune proactively advised the Party Committee, the People's Committee of the commune and coordinated with socio-political organizations to implement the model.

At first, Mr. Thuan selected farmers who were passionate about the organic production model, and encouraged them to use IMO to compost water hyacinth as fertilizer for specific types of plants such as longan, durian, jackfruit, etc. With the dedicated guidance of Mr. Thuan and the agricultural officers of the commune and district, after a while, the model brought results beyond expectations. Households that piloted the model reduced about 25% of production costs thanks to the use of homemade organic fertilizer. Notably, the soil became looser and more fertile, the plants grew healthily, had fewer pests and diseases, and the yield increased significantly.

The initial successes have created a strong driving force, spreading the movement of using IMO yeast to many other farming households in the commune. Accordingly, Mr. Thuan and the District Agricultural Service Center organized many training sessions, seminars, shared experiences, and instructed people on how to ferment IMO yeast, and how to use it effectively on different crops. "The Commune Farmers' Association boldly proposed that the district and commune support and equip the Association with projectors to share the results of households implementing effective models, and at the same time instruct new members on how to make organic fertilizer. With this visual form, more and more farmers have mastered the techniques and are confident in applying IMO yeast to agricultural production," said Mr. Thuan.

According to Mr. Thuan, up to now, the locality has expanded the model to 7 hamlets in the area, with about 550 households participating, equivalent to 100 hectares of fruit trees in the commune.

Forming a unique IMO tourism model

With the great potential of the model, Mr. Huynh Huu Thuan realized that the IMO fermentation process not only brings benefits to agricultural production but also an interesting and unique experience. Therefore, he came up with the idea of developing the IMO tourism model and received support from local authorities and farmers.

Mr. Le Thanh Lap - a farmer in An Nhon commune, shared: “Previously, I only knew how to apply the IMO model to help plants grow well. After Mr. Thuan shared about the IMO tourism model, I was really surprised and excited. The fact that tourists come to see the IMO fermentation process, make fertilizer by themselves and experience rural life not only helps me earn more income but also promotes the image of my hometown to more people.”

Accompanying the IMO tourism model, Mr. Nguyen Pham Thuy Hoang Dung - Community tourism development unit in Ho Chi Minh City shared, through visiting the actual model as well as leading many groups of tourists here to visit, I see that tourists highly appreciate this type of tourism. If the locality combines the advantages of fruit gardens with surrounding craft villages such as making piggy banks, weaving water hyacinth, and brick kilns, I think it will create a more attractive tour for tourists...

According to Mr. Thuan, the commune currently has 3 IMO Groups and 1 IMO Activity Point combined with a medicinal herb garden in Tan Phu Hamlet. In 2024, these points welcomed 432 visitors from 9 groups, including delegations of officials and members of the Ho Chi Minh City Farmers' Association to visit the flour making and pig raising model that treats odors with IMO. Sharing the orientation in the coming time, Mr. Huynh Huu Thuan - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Nhon Commune said that the locality will consolidate and develop the existing model with the goal of raising people's awareness of the clean agricultural model, as well as increasing income from rural tourism services...
