According to EUobserver, the European Parliament's Environment Committee has set binding targets for a 50% reduction in pesticides by 2030. Pesticides considered to be the most dangerous are proposed to be reduced by two-thirds compared to the period 2013-2017.
The committee also recommended banning the use of pesticides in designated sensitive areas including public parks, around schools and conservation areas.
Belgian EP MEP Marie Arena said the result would benefit farmers as well as the environment because the overuse of pesticides makes people sick and reduces bee populations.
However, MEPs from the right-wing European People's Party and the far-right party voted against it. Many farmers and agricultural cooperatives also objected to the EU imposing too strict regulations in this area.
