Symptoms of primary liver cancer often do not become apparent until the disease is advanced, making early detection extremely important.

According to the UK National Health Service (NHS), one of the most common signs of liver cancer is jaundice. This is when the skin looks yellow, but this can be difficult to notice in some skin types. A more noticeable feature is when the whites of the eyes start to turn yellow.

In addition, liver cancer patients also have some other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, feeling very full after eating even when absorbing only a small amount of food, feeling nauseous and vomiting, pain or swelling in the abdomen, itchy skin, feeling very tired and weak.

The NHS advises people to see their doctor immediately if they notice any of the above symptoms. "You should also contact your doctor if you have previously been diagnosed with a condition affecting the liver, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis C infection, and your health suddenly worsens," the NHS says.

While the exact cause of liver cancer remains a mystery, most cases are related to cirrhosis and liver damage, often caused by chronic alcohol abuse or long-term infection with hepatitis B or C. It is also suspected that being overweight and having a poor diet may increase the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to liver cancer.

For those who want to reduce their risk, the NHS recommends cutting down on alcohol intake and following a balanced, nutritious diet combined with regular physical activity. When it comes to treatment, early detection is key to potentially eliminating liver cancer completely. Options include surgical removal or even a liver transplant.

Currently, only a small proportion of people with liver cancer are diagnosed at a stage suitable for these treatments. Most patients are diagnosed with cancer that has already spread. In these cases, treatments such as chemotherapy are used to slow the progression of the cancer and relieve symptoms of pain and discomfort.
