VnExpressVnExpress01/05/2024

4/6 Vietnamese universities dropped more than 100 places in THE's 2024 Asian university rankings.

On May 1, the Times Higher Education (THE) organization announced the best university rankings in Asia in 2024. Vietnam has 6 schools - all of which are old faces.

Ton Duc Thang University is at the top, holding the 193rd rank, down more than 100 places compared to 2023. Next, Duy Tan University is in the 251-300 group, down about 150 places.

The group that dropped in the rankings also includes Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University. These two universities were in the 351-400 and 501-600 groups last year, but this year they dropped to the 501-600 and 601+ groups.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University maintained their positions, in the 501-600 and 601+ groups, respectively. Ho Chi Minh City Open University submitted data but has not been ranked by THE.

Previously, in the organization's 2024 global university rankings, 3/6 of the above schools also dropped 100-300 places compared to last year.

THE said it evaluates universities according to 18 criteria, divided into 5 groups: research quality (30%), research environment (28%), teaching (24.5%), income from knowledge transfer and ability to attract funding (10%), international outlook (7.5%). Compared to last year, the number of criteria is 5 more.

Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University are ranked higher than other Vietnamese universities due to the high weighting of the criteria on research and international publications (58%).

According to the conclusions of the Ministry of Education and Training in 2022, the two schools have many policies to motivate scientific research, spending a large proportion of their revenue on this activity (10-20%). In addition to the research of lecturers, both also signed research cooperation contracts with domestic and foreign scientists. This contributed to increasing the number of international publications.

This year’s Asia University Rankings features 739 universities from 31 countries and regions. China’s Tsinghua and Peking Universities hold the top two spots for the fifth consecutive year. Of the top 10, China has five representatives, up from one last year. The remaining spots come from Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

In terms of quantity, Japan leads with 119 ranked schools, followed by India with 91 schools.

THE is one of the three largest university ranking organizations in the world, along with QS and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).

With the QS table, in 2024, most Vietnamese universities also dropped in rank despite having more representatives, while the Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking had no representatives.
