Activities of Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long within the framework of the State visit of the King and Queen of Belgium to Vietnam

Within the framework of the State visit of the King and Queen of Belgium to Vietnam, on April 1, 2025, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long attended a number of important activities with the leaders of the Belgian Government and the Belgian business community in Vietnam.

1. Received Mr. Rudi Vervoort, Minister - Prime Minister of Brussels Region, Kingdom of Belgium and attended the opening speech of the Workshop "Vietnam - Belgium Cooperation on Sustainable Development Solutions".

On the afternoon of April 1, 2025, at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long received Mr. Rudi Vervoort, Minister - Prime Minister of the Brussels Region, Kingdom of Belgium and attended the opening speech of the Workshop "Vietnam - Belgium Cooperation on Sustainable Development Solutions".

At the meeting, the two sides had many positive discussions on the potential for cooperation in the energy sector between Vietnam and Belgium. Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long and Mr. Rudi Vervoort, Minister - President of the Brussels region, both agreed that Vietnam and Belgium need to strengthen cooperation and technology transfer in areas such as green economy, circular economy, cooperation in green and clean energy projects and energy transition towards equity, as committed in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), towards sustainable, environmentally friendly energy development, meeting global development standards.

On the Belgian side, Mr. Rudi Vervoort emphasized Belgium's strengths in the energy and renewable energy sectors, with the participation of many leading corporations, especially in the field of wind power. The meeting was also attended by Belgian energy enterprises, who expressed their deep interest in exploring opportunities and investing in the Vietnamese market, thereby expanding to Southeast Asian markets; at the same time, they are willing to share experiences, transfer advanced technology, and contribute to developing Vietnam into a leading energy center in the region.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Workshop on “Vietnam-Belgium Cooperation on Sustainable Development Solutions”, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long shared about Vietnam’s efforts in energy transition. Currently, Vietnam is in the process of strong transformation, especially in the energy sector, to realize national development goals while achieving international commitments on sustainable development. The Draft Adjustment of the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 (Adjusted Power Plan VIII) and the Plan for Implementation of the Plan have clearly demonstrated the efforts and breakthrough policies of the Vietnamese Government in the field of sustainable development and green energy transition.

The Deputy Minister affirmed that Vietnam welcomes technology transfer and investment from Belgium in important areas such as green economy, circular economy, energy transition and renewable energy. This cooperation not only supports Vietnam in developing and mastering advanced technologies but is also consistent with the strengths and focus areas in the policies of the EU and its member states.

2. Attend the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between John Cockerill Energy Group and The Green Solutions Company

Also within the framework of the State visit of the King and Queen of Belgium to Vietnam, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Minister - President of the Brussels Capital Region, Mr. Rudi Vervoort; Minister - President of the Wallonia Region, Mr. Adrien Dolimont; Minister in charge of Brussels and Communications of the Flanders Region (Kingdom of Belgium), Ms. Cieltje Van Achter; Minister - President of the French-speaking Belgian Community, Ms. Elizabeth Degryse, John Cockerill Energy Group and The Green Solutions Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on selecting John Cockerill Group as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of alkaline electrolysis equipment as well as the operation and maintenance of electrolysis equipment of the hydrogen and green ammonia production project of The Green Solutions Company in Tra Vinh and Ben Tre provinces.

Congratulating the achievements of the enterprises, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasized that this is a highlight in the sustainable development between Vietnam and the Kingdom of Belgium and a favorable start for long-term cooperation between enterprises of the two countries. The Deputy Minister hopes that after the signing ceremony, John Cockerill Group and The Green Solutions Company will continue to promote their capabilities to make strong progress in renewable energy in Vietnam, especially in the development of green hydrogen and ammonia.

Belgium is currently Vietnam's leading important trading partner in the European Union (EU), the 5th largest export market and the 7th largest import market of Vietnam in the EU (According to statistics of Vietnam Customs); in the opposite direction, Vietnam is Belgium's largest trading partner in ASEAN (According to statistics of Eurostat).

In 2024, two-way trade between Vietnam and Belgium will reach 4.45 billion USD, up nearly 16% compared to 2023. Of which, exports to Belgium will reach 3.78 billion USD, up 17.2% over the previous year; imports from Belgium will reach 671.8 million USD, up 9.2%. In 2024, Vietnam will continue to have a trade surplus with Belgium with a trade surplus of 3.1 billion USD, higher than the 2.6 billion USD in 2023.
